ETHNIC STUDIES AT HARVARD COLLEGE Ethnic studies are inherently comparative. Those who wish to understand the uniqueness of a particular people can do so most effectively via comparison. Ethnic studies scholars seek to understand why the boundaries of particular ethnic groups change and why this process of ethnic group formation is so fluid. The study of ethnicity at Harvard is structured to cast the net wide, and to focus on the broad canvas of the human experience. It includes the United States, obviously, but being situated in a broadly comparative context enriches the study of ethnicity and race in the United States. Most, but not all of the studies are inherently historical in order to understand better the changing ways in which individuals choose to affiliate or have been coerced into categories by others There is no sole means or single methodology by which one can study race and ethnicity. Such studies properly flourish in the humanities and in the social sciences. At Harvard, we believe ethnic studies to be a vibrant field marked by extraordinary intellectual variety and methodological diversity. Please follow the links below for information about ethnic studies at Harvard College. A printed version of this website, "Ethnic Studies at Harvard College 2003/04" will be made available at the beginning of the fall term.

Recent Reports Support HRW World Report 1999 Order Online SRI LANKA The sixteen-year conflict between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) continued to produce human rights violations on both sides. On July 29, the international human rights movement lost one of its most respected and beloved leaders when a suspected LTTE suicide bomber assassinated Neelan Tiruchelvam, founder of both the International Centre for Ethnic Studies and the Law and Society Trust, a human rights research and advocacy organization. Tiruchelvam, a Tamil member of parliament, had angered the LTTE by proposing an alternative to a separate Tamil state, namely a plan for devolution of power to regional councils set up in part along ethnic lines. Human Rights Developments The war was increasingly complicated by paramilitary actors, often working alongside the army as auxiliary forces, but sometimes at odds with them and with each other. Armed clashes between rival groups claimed civilian lives. Impunity remained a critical problem, with few prosecutions for human rights violations, and torture prevalent both in the context of armed conflict and in day-to-day policing. Discrimination against Tamil civilians by members of the security forces attempting to root out the LTTE continued throughout the country and especially in the capital city of Colombo and in army-controlled areas of the north and east. The war in the north continued to claim civilian lives and generated thousands of new internally displaced people and a smaller number of external refugees as people fled military shelling, clashes between the army and the LTTE, food shortages, and LTTE recruitment of children and adults for military service. On September 15 more than twenty civilians were reported killed and some forty injured in an air force bombing of the Puthukkudiyiruppu market in the northern district of Mullaithivu; houses and buildings nearby were also destroyed. Three days later a suspected LTTE attack on Sinhalese villagers in the east killed more than fifty.

Ethnic Studies refers to the investigation, exploration, and involvement with those factors and areas that bear on the lives and experiences, both past and present, of ethnically distinct minority groups in the U.S. The Institute for Ethnic Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is composed of three separate programs: Latino and Latin American Studies, African American and African Studies, and Native American Studies. Although they operate together under the leadership of a single Director, each program has its own coordinator and plans its own curriculum and activities. The Institute offers several interdisciplinary programs of study. Courses are taught by core faculty who hold formal joint appointments within the Institute and by affiliated faculty from various departments within the College of Arts and Sciences, such as Anthropology, English, Geography, History, Modern Languages and Literatures, Political Science, and Sociology, as well as other colleges at UNL, such as Fine and Performing Arts, Business Administration, and Teachers College. The Institute for Ethnic Studies and the three programs also sponsor or co-sponsor a variety of lectures, symposia, research projects, and cultural events on campus, and serve as a resource for UNL students, faculty, and staff as well as the wider community.
