From a review of Lend Me Your Ear:
"From the outset of her investigation into the rhetoric surrounding deafness and deaf people, Brenda Jo Brueggemann cites the educator Quintilian's ideal of the vir bonus dicendi peritus, the good man speaking well. She highlights the equal importance in this model of the person being good and the "problems" that deafness poses for a culture that wonders how a deaf person can be taught to be good if he or she cannot "hear the wisdom of the ages." In Lend Me Your Ear she assesses the consequences of this age-old attitude that has resulted in a myriad of ongoing rhetorical constructions that are inextricably linked to the concept of speaking well and the following presumptions that denigrate deaf people." gupress.gallaudet.edu/BJBcompliments.html

BACKGROUND
POINT OF VIEW
Whose Field Is It, Anyway? Disability Studies in the Academy
By LEONARD CASSUTO T hese are heady times for disability studies. From a grassroots movement that didn't appear on the curricular radar as recently as 10 years ago, a burgeoning constituency has sprung up, ALSO SEE: Join the debate: Should the validity of research on disabilities and the disabled depend on whether the researcher is disabled? Should scholars in disability studies reveal their "disability status"?
The responses

along with a journal, several high-profile books, and the kind of academic attention that shows that a field is achieving legitimacy. But disability studies is deliberately following a well-traveled route to recognition, and many of its members seem to be paying scant attention to the dangers encountered by those who have been down that road before.
When the microphone was passed to me, I didn't answer the question directly. Instead, I spoke of the distinction between the professional and the personal, and how important that distinction is to me. The question disturbed me, but it really shouldn't have surprised me. Throughout the conference, I had repeatedly met with discussions about "disability status." In one session on teaching, for example, the moderators had focused explicitly on the role that one's own disability status should play in the classroom. I listened to teachers describe classroom encounters of such intimacy that I wondered how they could grade students afterwards. And I heard much passionate argument that only disabled people should teach disability studies.

But who are these postmodern theories really helping? By Norah Vincent August 18, 1999 "B yron had a club foot, and Homer was blind." Northern Michigan University professor of English David Mitchell was lecturing me on the latest academic sub-discipline: disability studies. As president of the Society for Disability Studies, he is one of the world's reigning authorities on the social construction of disability and the prevalence of disabled writers in the literary canon. "Toulouse Lautrec was short statured," he went on, "a dwarfish figure. There's also Henry James, Stephen Crane, Hemingway. You can keep going down the line." And he did, but I was stuck on Hemingway. What was his disability, I wondered? Later, when asked to clarify, he paused. "Did I say he had one? I think I was talking about one of Hemingway's characters from 'The Sun Also Rises.' Jake Barnes. He's impotent and he has a war wound."

Implications
INTRODUCTION While disability has been included in public health, the focus has traditionally been on the primary prevention of disabilities rather than understanding the disability condition or its secondary conditions. In order to address this gap in training for public health professionals, the RRTC has partnered with the Oregon Office of Disability and Health (OODH) in developing a curriculum on contemporary perspectives and issues of disability for students in Masters of Public Health programs. The content will draw heavily on the RRTC research findings and is anticipated to include epidemiology of disabilities, secondary conditions and their prevention, and effective health promotion strategies. Ultimately, this project will prepare professionals to understand and support the health and wellness efforts of people with disabilities. TRAINING GOALS METHODS The curriculum will be evaluated through satisfaction questionnaires, survey instruments, and course evaluations. Revisions based on evaluation and feedback data from field-test sites will be implemented prior to further dissemination.

Defining Terms
It is intriguing to consider this hefty and valuable volume edited by Albrecht, Seelman and Bury in light of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary's (1993, p. 526) definitions of "Handbook." First, we learn that a handbook is "a book capable of being conveniently carried as a ready reference." If you focus on portability, the term is a colossal misnomer in this case. At more than 850 pages, 8.5" by 11" dimensions, a sturdy hard cover, and weighing in at - well, no, I did not actually weigh it - this book can be conveniently used only by carrying it as little as possible.
Fortunately, I can recommend that you should clear a space on or near your desk for your copy of the Handbook of Disability Studies (henceforth, The Handbook) to remain, serving as a "ready [albeit, nonmobile] reference." The book's physical heft is matched by its intellectual content; thus, it comes closer to meeting the latter half of the dictionary's second definition of "Handbook", i.e., "a concise reference book covering a particular subject." The following review attempts - within the limits of this reader's disciplinary competence applied to a robustly multi-disciplinary compilation - to assess the book's coverage of the domain that has only recently emerged under the rubric "Disability Studies."

IRLEN SYNDROME (IS) People with Irlen Syndrome are usually inefficient readers and have to devote so much attention to the identification of individual words (due to print distortions) that they may not pay sufficient attention to the meaning of what is being read. Reading becomes an effort, with limits on the length of time they can read and maintain effective comprehension. In addition to reading and writing difficulties, people with this problem might be considered to have behavioural or attitudinal problems. Attention span while reading may be short due to print distortions and eye strain/fatigue, and this can be misinterpreted as distractability or lack of motivation.
