The Society for Disability Studies is a nonprofit scientific and educational organization established to promote interdisciplinary research on humanistic and social scientific aspects of disability and chronic illness. Its membership includes social scientists, scholars in the humanities and disability rights advocates concerned with the problems of disabled people in society. The purpose of the society is to bring together people from diverse backgrounds and substantive concerns. The Society is committed to developing theoretical and practical knowledge about disability and to promoting the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities in society. As part of this effort, the University is committed to the full inclusion of individuals with disabilities and continually improving the accessibility of our campus, programs and activities. The ADA Coordinator's Office was created to guide the University's efforts to move beyond compliance and toward seamless access. As the University's focal point for disability related initiatives, the ADA Coordinator's Office collaborates with University offices, governmental agencies, and advocacy groups to inform decision-making and ensure University compliance with State and Federal mandates.
To accomplish this the Office is a referral point for disability related information, services and resources; provides consultation on policy reviews and facilities planning; conducts workshops and training on disability related topics; serves as a clearing house for disability related complaints; and develops disability related initiatives.

    Disability Studies Unit New activities include a Diploma Course in Speech Therapy which is sponsored by the Ministry of Health and supported by the University of London, Centre for International Child Health and the Hospital for Children Great Ormond Street, Department of Speech and Language. Post-basic Diploma ( leading later of Degree ) Programmes in Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy will be started in collaboration with the University of Sydney, Faculty of Health Sciences. Through all these activities the DSU seeks to improve the quality of life of people who have disabilities, focusing particularly on promoting the greater use of the health referral system for bringing about an improvement in their health situation. The DSU is the only academic unit in a university in a developing country focusing entirely on disability issues. Moreover, it is a self-financing unit.

    Disability Studies is an emerging interdisciplinary field of scholarship that critically examines issues related to the dynamic interplays between disability and various aspects of culture and society. Disability studies unites critical inquiry and political advocacy by utilizing scholarly approaches from post-positivist social sciences as well as the humanities and the arts. When specifically applied to educational issues, Disability Studies promotes the importance of infusing analyses and interpretations of disability throughout all forms of educational research, teacher education, and graduate studies in education.
    Purpose:
    To encourage Disability Studies in education; to provide an organizational vehicle for networking among Disability Studies researchers in education; and to increase the visibility and influence of Disability Studies among all educational researchers.
