Disability Studies Quarterly (DSQ) is the journal of the Society for Disability Studies (SDS). It is a multidisciplinary and international journal of interest to social scientists, scholars in the humanities, disability rights advocates, creative writers, and others concerned with the issues of people with disabilities. It represents the full range of methods, epistemologies, perspectives, and content that compose multidisciplinary disability studies. DSQ is committed to developing theoretical and practical knowledge about disability and to promoting the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities in society. DSQ is in transition toward having both a peer-reviewed section and a non-peer-reviewed section, in general and symposium editions. All peer-reviewed articles must meet the highest and most rigorous standards within their larger academic discipline and will be anonymously reviewed by at least two scholars in the field. Non-peer-reviewed materials can be commentary, essay, research-in-progress, poetry, or fiction on some topic relevant to the field of disability studies. All non-peer-reviewed materials will be reviewed for quality and appropriateness and are not guaranteed publication. Disability Studies Quarterly Founding Editor: Irving Kenneth Zola (1935-1994) Editors:
Corinne Kirchner, American Foundation for the Blind.

Ryerson-RBC Institute
Welcome to the School of Disability Studies at Ryerson University!
Do you have a Developmental Services Worker diploma, another disability-related diploma or other relevant academic/experiential qualifications? Would you like to explore new approaches to direct care, management, community development, policy, planning and advocacy? Do you want the challenge of new ideas, and the opportunity to be part of an exciting change process in the field of disability? Build on your qualifications and experience, earn a Bachelor of Arts in Disability Studies , and make a difference...
What is Disability Studies?
More traditional approaches to disability focus on ways to rehabilitate or "fix" people with disabilities. In Disability Studies we focus on society's definition and response to disability.
We explore the social context and experiences of people with disabilities. We draw from the work of scholars, artists and activists and the direct experiences of our students.
This unique approach equips our graduates to take leadership roles in community-based agencies, advocacy roles in the disability movement, or to continue their studies at an advanced level.

Disability Studies
Bachelor of Arts
A part-time program giving community college graduates the opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Applied Arts degree An underlying premise of this program is that the disadvantage typically experienced by those who are disabled reflects, primarily, the way society defines and responds to disability. Disability Studies is a part-time, degree-completion program for those with:
  • Developmental Services Worker diploma
  • Disability-related diploma
  • Other relevant academic/experiential qualifications
Disability Studies will prepare students for leadership roles in:
  • Direct care
  • Management
  • Community development
  • Policy
  • Planning
  • Advocacy (both paid career and volunteer activities)
Students will develop an increased awareness of the socio-political context of disability and learn to apply this perspective while working with the phenomenon of disability. Flexible course delivery formats maximize the program's accessibility to adult learners across the province and those with disabilities.
