  • What can I know?
  • How should I live my life?
  • What is real?
  • What is a mind? Is it different from a brain?
  • What is good reasoning?
  • Is there a God?
  • Are we really free, or are we controlled by past events?
Philosophy asks fundamental questions and tries to arrive at reasonable answers. The University of Rochester offers undergraduate philosophy courses at all levels, a major, minors, and graduate programs leading to Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in philosophy. Its courses deal with epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of language, history of philosophy, logic, ethics, social and political philosophy, philosophy of science, and philosophy of religion. The Department office is in 532 Lattimore Hall on the River Campus of the University of Rochester (see maps ). On the same floor are Faculty and TA offices and the Department's Lewis White Beck Memorial Library containing over 10,000 books and journals.

accepted by the University of Konstanz in February 2000
to be published in Synthese Library Dordrecht: Kluwer, winter 2000
Given this background, the scope of my Habilitation Thesis is threefold:
    (a) At first I develop a general conception of holism that is intended to be applicable to candidates for holism in any area. My purpose is to show that holism is not opposed to rational analysis. It can be captured by the conceptual tools of analytic philosophy.

The long-term goal of The SNePS Research Group is the design and construction of a natural-language-using computerized cognitive agent, and carrying out the research in artificial intelligence, computational linguistics, and cognitive science necessary for that endeavor. The three-part focus of the group is on knowledge representation, reasoning, and natural-language understanding and generation. The group is widely known for its development of the SNePS knowledge representation/reasoning system, and Cassie, its computerized cognitive agent.
