Cognitive Science and Philosophy Bibliography Index
...
Research Sources on Concepts of Person and Self
This is a bibliography of material where issues in moral philosophy are engaged with the theoretical tools of the cognitive sciences. Most items bear primarily on moral psychology and epistemology. The authors included here are applying concepts and theories from the cognitive sciences in ethics, rather than investigating research and theories in those sciences from a moral point of view. The bibliography is organized into the following seven sections: Since these different subject areas overlap, some items may fit in several of them but are only listed once.

53. John Rethorst - Art And Imagination: Implications Of Cognitive Science For Moral

Art and Imagination: Implications of
Cognitive Science for Moral Education
John Rethorst
Cornell University
When the fine philosopher Iris Murdoch says that "teaching art is teaching morals," she is at once in agreement with the poets Shelley and Yeats as well as with John Dewey. She is also radically, even dangerously, susceptible to misunderstanding. She does not mean that the arts, or a study of them, will police a change in behavior, or even contribute to a discussion between Kantian and utilitarian points of view. She does not mean that virtue may be inculcated in the unsuspecting by books of virtues, stories selected to tell you what virtue is, and why you have to do it that way. Rather, she means something much deeper, something close to the heart of morality and of education. She says that art is good for the soul. A working demonstration of such a concept is difficult. Kant tried it in the third critique, but his arguments are consistent with the ideal of universal reason that informs his work. And since universal reason is problematic, as MacIntyre and others have recently suggested

New Trends in Cognitive Science
Perspectives from Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Epistemology, and Artificial Life with plenary talks organized by the Austrian Society of Cognitive Science (ASoCS) Last update: Jan 2000 Purpose and Topics Conference Schedule Posters Organizing Committee ... Additional Information
Conference Proceedings
The official proceedings appeared end of 1999 under the title "Understanding Representation in the Cognitive Sciences" with Kluwer Academic / Plenum Publishers, New York.
Purpose and Topics
The goal of this single-track conference was to investigate and discuss new approaches and movements in cognitive science in a workshop-like atmosphere. Among the topics which seem to have emerged in the last years are: embodiment of knowledge, system theoretic and computational neuroscience approaches to cognition, dynamics in recurrent neural architectures, evolutionary and artificial life approaches to cognition, and (epistemological) implications for perception and representation, constructivist concepts and the problem of knowledge representation, autopoiesis, implications for epistemology and philosophy (of science). Contrary to many conferences in this field, the focus is on interdisciplinary cooperation and on conceptual and epistemological questions, rather than on technical details. We are trying to achieve this by giving more room to discussion and interaction between the participants (e.g., invited comments on papers, distribution of papers to the participants before the conference, etc.). According to the interdisciplinary character of cognitive science, we welcome papers/talks from the fields of artificial life, empirical, cognitive, and computational neuroscience, philosophy (of science), epistemology, anthropology, computer science, psychology, and linguistics.
