Anniversary of D-Day
Sunday marks 60 years since the allied invasion of Normandy and Nazi occupied Western Europe, now commemorated as part of the National World War II Memorial in Washington, DC. Chris Preble, Cato's Director of Foreign Policy Studies, recently wrote ,"The elimination of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan made Americans safer." He continues, "Unfortunately, the Iraq War, although launched under the pretext of fighting terrorism, has in reality only exacerbated anti-American sentiments ... politicians now owe it to Americans to craft a swift exit strategy that will limit further casualties in Iraq." Introducing NILS
Our History
The National Institute of Labour Studies - referred to as "NILS" - at the Flinders University, Adelaide is the pre-eminent labour studies research centre in Australia. Established in 1972 by Professor Keith Hancock, NILS became an incorporated body in 1981 after which it began employing its own staff. Under the leadership of Richard Blandy, Judith Sloan, Mark Wooden and subsequently Sue Richardson, it has established a reputation for outstanding and timely work in labour studies.
Mission
NILS produces high quality research and consulting in the following key areas:
  • analysis of labour market developments at national, industry, occupational and regional levels
  • industrial relations developments and issues
  • employment, unemployment and labour mobility
  • labour productivity and workplace performance
  • employee and management opinion surveys
  • education and training
  • immigration
  • earnings and wage trends
NILS has become one of Australia's leading research centres in the broad field of social sciences. It possesses a proven track record of research excellence and productivity and can, with modest pride, revel in the support of such organisations as the Business Council of Australia and the Productivity Commission. The success of NILS is measured by its record of publications , refereed journal articles, conference papers and citations.

Quaternary Studies
An Interdisciplinary Program
Contents
The Program
Rutgers' Graduate Certificate in Quaternary Studies is a multidisciplinary program allowing students to specialize in the study of the last few million years in earth's historythe Late Cenozoic and Quaternary geologic time periods. The program explores the interaction of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere of these years, during which fluctuations in climate triggered the development of continental-scale ice sheets, caused major changes in sea level, and initiated major migrations of animal and plant communities. These changes shaped our contemporary physical environment and stongly influenced evolution. This period saw the dawn of Homo sapiens and the simultaneous extinction of many other groups of organisms. Our knowledge of Late Cenozoic and Quaternary events helps researchers understand current environmental changes and may enable them to anticipate future changes affecting the earth and its inhabitants. The program offers students the opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research in the fields of anthropology, geology, geography, biology, meteorology, and environmental science. Based on a broad, multidisclipinary approach, the program provides the necessary theoretical and practical background for students pursuing careers that may require specialized knowledge of the Late Cenozoic and Quaternary periods.

The Internet Studies Center at the University of Minnesota addresses compelling questions surrounding the social, ethical, legal, and rhetorical aspects of the Internet. The Center is based in the Rhetoric Department but is an interdisciplinary effort drawing on faculty from around the University and industry partners. By providing access to current theories, critiques, and explanations of the Internet, the Internet Studies Center is a hub for innovative Internet research and discussion. Specific goals for the Center include:
  • encourage cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research; provide structured opportunities for graduate students to take active roles in the Center's research; and offer students, scholars, and citizens access to current theories, critiques, and explanations of the Internet.

Your source for information and products
relating to the study of shamanism Now you can join more than 5,000 people each year who take our rigorous training in core shamanism, the near universal methods of shamanism without a specific cultural perspective. 200-plus training programs are given each year in North America, Europe, Latin America and Australia. Founded by internationally renowned anthropologist Michael Harner with a three-fold mission to study, to teach, and to preserve shamanism, the Foundation for Shamanic Studies has built a reputation of consistency and dependability by providing reliable training in Core Shamanism to interested learners worldwide. Dr. Harner has been recognized as a pioneer in the field of anthropology and shamanism since the early 60's when he chose to immerse himself in tribal spiritual traditions rather than restrict his study to more traditional academic techniques. New! First North American Three-Year Program in Advanced Shamanism and Shamanic Healing
Starts October 3-8, 2004.

  • Evaluation of mutagenicity of feline vaccines using A L assay: Year 3.
Little is known about the etiopathogenesis of vaccine-associated sarcomas, but the probability of tumor development seems higher when adjuvanted vaccines have been administered. The investigators hypothesize that adjuvanted vaccines currently in use are inherently mutagenic to mammalian cells as a result of oxidative damage to DNA. In the first year of their research, the investigators used an in vitro assay, called the A L assay, to evaluate the toxicity and mutagenicity of some commonly used feline vaccines. Because adjuvanted vaccines were found to be more toxic and mutagenic than non-adjuvanted vaccines, the researchers continued this line of investigation into a second and third year. They also hypothesize that cats that develop vaccine-associated sarcomas are more susceptible to oxidative damage than are other cats. This hypothesis will be investigated by comparing the anti-oxidant capacity of affected cats with that of unaffected cats.
Principal investigator is E. A. McNiel, DVM, PhD, Colorado State University. Co-investigator is S. M. LaRue.

Integrating Environmental and Population Variation: A Model for Biodiversity Studies (AMBIOS)
    Areas of study:
  • The relationships between breeding ecology, niche width and biogeographic range, and their bearing on the future dynamics of biodiversity at a time of accelerating environmental change and extinction will be studied.
  • The development of operational concepts for assessing and describing the very basis of biodiversity will be established This will involve evaluating and comparing phenotypic and genotypic features as measures of the buffering capacity of the components of biodiversity with respect to changing environmental factors, and will be achieved by focusing on genetic heterogeneity levels and phenotypic responses in relation to the environment, and on thermal tolerance.
  • The determination of the mechanisms involved in the transition from polymorphic, interbreeding populations to those of species status, and the elucidation of how such changes can be distinguished from phenotypic plasticity, will be addressed.
  • Techniques for the identification of species and 'lower' taxonomic units will be developed, and new molecular methods tested in those species in which the levels of polymorphism are high.
