Helps for the person who wants to plan a unit study on their own! This is our th year of homeschooling (wow) - and we have used unit studies for many of those years. Although we have tried Konos and Amanda Bennett's unit studies, and we were enrolled in the Advanced Training Institute for 2 years, we have generally found that the unit studies that work best for us are the ones that we plan ourselves. Sometimes we follow our students' interests and sometimes we plan a unit around something that we see that needs to be covered (for whatever reason). Either way - we have found that planning our own (and using several resources to help us along) works best for us. Here is how I plan our unit studies. F irst decide upon the topic of the unit study. Ask yourself why you want to study that topic - and to what extent do you want to study it. For example - let us pretend you want to study the MIddle Ages. Do you want to study it because your student is fascinated by castles and knights? Because you know they have never studied it? Perhaps because it is in a scope and sequence you need to cover? It doesn't matter what your reason is - but understanding that reason will help you to plan your unit (trust me on that). Secondly - do you simply want to introduce the topic to the student - or do you want to study all the major people and events of that period of time? These are decisions you need to make BEFORE you plan out your unit study. N ext, find out what your student knows already. You can do this several ways - you can just ask them to tell you what they know about this subject. You can ask them specific questions to see if they know the answer (like "Who was King Henry VIII?"). Or you can just go ahead and plan anyway without finding out what they know...(but I wouldn't...I've been there - done that - have the scrapped unit study plans to show it).

A Celtic Studies Starter Kit Last updated 11/29/2003 These are the books I think of as a basic "starter kit" for Celtic Studies. Many of the "standards," those books that have been considered essential reading, are now out of print. They are still current and worth having, so I'm still going to recommend them. You'll notice that I've divided the list into two categories, the first are those that are available now, the second group are out of print but really worth looking for. After several requests, I've updated the "starter" kit, and I've added a short list of a few more "advanced" or secondary books. If I had to list the must haves, I personally find the following books essential: The Celtic Studies Starter Kit Patrick K. Ford. The Mabinogi and Other Medieval Welsh Tales. Berkeley: University of California Press, 1977. ISBN 0520034147. The Mabinogi are the four Welsh mythological tales. Ford doesn't include the romances, which aren't part of the Mabinogi proper, but he does include the four branches, the native tales, and Taliessin material that is not available elsewhere in English. I think his introduction alone is worth the price of the book, and his translation is faithful to the tone and text of the Welsh, and easier to enjoy than any other. Facts and myths about Uralic studies: a review article of Jazyki mira: Ural'skie jazyki. [Languages of the world: Uralic languages.] Moskva: Nauka, 1993. 398 pp. (Otvetstvennye redaktory: Ju. S. Eliseev; K. E. Majtinskaja) by Tapani Salminen (Helsinki) "Ural'skie jazyki" is the first volume in an ambitious publishing project dealing with all of the world's languages. It is a synchronic survey of a basically random collection of modern languages, not a diachronic study of a group of genetically related languages. For a reader less familiar with the Uralic languages, the status of the relationship between the languages may even remain obscure. This should not be surprising, since both the inter- and intra-branch diversity of the Uralic family equals that of Indo-European. This fact has sometimes been denied, e.g. in a recent handbook by Ruhlen (1987). Another point where Ruhlen, following his general presumptions, takes an untenable position concerns the alleged genetic relationship between Uralic and Yukagir. The lack of diachrony, however, has led to the rather positive result that so-called long range comparisons, including the notorious Nostratic hypothesis, are barely mentioned. The lack of a historical aspect is further reflected in the absence of any lengthy treatment of the history of Uralic studies. In this context, it is apt to mention a competing volume with the same name (Sinor 1988; reviewed by Salminen 1990), which includes a historiography of Uralic linguistics by Wickman (1988). Korhonen (1986) is a larger study of the Finnish scholarly tradition. Ruhlen (1987, 6477), in spite of its other shortcomings, can also be recommended for its excellent summary of the topic.
