Black Warrior Survey 2001
Volunteers Needed!!
The Black Warrior Survey of the University of Alabama Department of Anthropology was begun in the summer of 1999. The goal of the project is generally to locate and record archaeological sites within two three-mile wide survey transects. More specifically, the project’s focus is to provide a more complete understanding of the Moundville settlement pattern. Although the Moundville site itself, as well as the single-mound Mississippian sites are generally well understood, much less is known about Moundville-related farmstead sites. The survey’s aim is to locate and record as many of these sites as possible. Of particular interest are the geomorphological characteristics of the site locations. During the 2000 field season, a total of 44 sites were recorded and several previously recorded sites were revisited. Of those 44 sites, 26 sites contained shell-tempered pottery, and are thus potential farmsteads. Although the project is supported financially by the Alabama Historical Commission, only the field director and assistant (both UA graduate students) are funded. All other crew members are volunteers.

Aims and Scope: is an interdisciplinary journal which expands upon the growing theory and research linking anthropology with medicine. It is the successor to British Medical Anthropology Review and publishes original papers within the broad framework of medical anthropology addressing a world-wide audience. With biomedicine continuing to grow in technical sophistication and with the proliferation of disease categories, anthropology has extended its boundaries to embrace new frameworks. The globalisation and politics of biomedicine, narrative approaches to illness, new reproductive technologies, indigenous African and Asian medicines, local critiques of professional healing systems, modern and post-modern identities of individual states and their impact on sickness, together with developments that link ethology and population genetics to medicine are addressed by

Anthropology is a traditional liberal arts discipline which considers the nature and dynamics of human culture and society. Humans are to a large degree the product of their specific social setting and associated cultural tradition, thus our vision of the world around us is often blocked by the limitations of our own circumstances. Anthropology addresses this tremendous variation in the human experience Contact Information

Sociology and anthropology (South Orange, NJ)

Department of Sociology and Anthropology
No person ever looks at the world with pristine eyes. S/He sees it edited by a definite set of customs and institutions and ways of thinking - Ruth Benedict The department offers two programs of study leading to a Bachelors of Arts degree in either sociology or anthropology. The department also offers a minor in each of these two fields. Our aim is to foster in students a critical intellectual capacity and an understanding of human behavior and human problems in a socio-cultural context. This capacity and understanding enables students to analyze past experiences as well as contemporary institutions and helps them make decisions both cross-culturally and inter-personally. Graduates of these programs are expected to be critical thinkers and to have the analytical and technical skills that are necessary for a successful and fulfilled life in society. Sociology and anthropology give insight into special relations in families, communities, groups and organizations. Both disciplines examine institutional components of contemporary societies, such as religion, politics, education, business, health, law, language, art, communication, technology and science. Sociology and anthropology attempt to provide a comparative appreciation of past and contemporary societies by cultivating an awareness of both the social sources of behavior and the human need of living in community with others. Given the University's commitment to relevant career/life preparation, the Department's programs expose students to computer-oriented instruction and research, information retrieval and assessment, and data analysis. This is a collective and collaborative effort that we invite you to join.
