About the
Anthropology Collection Database
Contents:
Introduction The permanent research collection of the Department of Anthropology comprises approximately 17,000 objects, most of which are ethnographic. The Department actively collects materials from the indigenous cultures of western North America (exclusive of Mexico) and the Pacific Rim, including all Pacific islands and East Asia. Current strengths of the collection are general holdings from the U.S. Southwest and the Pacific Islands, and basketry from California. Earlier years of collecting have yielded both ethnographic and archaeological materials from East Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Central and South America. The database includes digital images of collection objects. Currently there are over 10,000 images available, documenting the areas of strength in the collection. Digital photographing of the remainder of the collection is an ongoing project.

Anthropological Archaeology at UCSD
The Department of Anthropology offers a broad-range approach to the study of the archaeology of complex societies. By taking a world-wide view of the rise, maintenance and collapse of ancient complex social organizations, we seek to present a theoretically integrated graduate curriculum in this field of archaeology and prehistory. Archaeology is new at UCSD. Since 1991, the Department of Anthropology made a commitment to an integrated approach to the study of anthropology by hiring its first archaeologist. Since then, an undergraduate program in anthropological archaeology was developed including the establishment of course curricula, field schools, and a research laboratory. Beginning in 1998, a graduate program has been offered leading to a Ph.D. in anthropology with a concentration in anthropological archaeology . Students pursing a concentration in anthropological archaeology are exposed to theoretical developments in socio-cultural and biological anthropology during their first two years of study. Unfortunately delays in developing and getting approval on some details of the program make it impossible to provide a full description yet. Interested students should contact the department listed archaeologists (below). While theoretical issues concerning ancient complex societies are addressed through readings and course work, the program will focus on a series of case studies from the Old World based on faculty areas of specialization. Based on current faculty, these areas include: Mesopotamia, the Levant, Anatolia and West Africa.

A solid undergraduate foundation in anthropology or sociology secures the analytical skills needed to undertake professional degree programs (in anthropology, sociology, business, law, and social services) or to embark on a number of careers (from management to research). A minor in anthropology or sociology is available. Special emphasis programs and honors thesis options are available to qualifying majors.

It’s a staggering thought-the pizza cartons we leave behind today could be important clues to our cultural identity sometime in the distant future. And the sleuths who will decipher such clues will be the anthropologists Anthropologists study humankind – our societies, customs, the lands we occupy or leave, cultures, physical evolution, languages and more. Anthropologists are time travelers, too, living among present-day communities or digging through remnants of ancient civilizations.
The department offers the BA or BS degrees in anthropology, with minors in anthropology, archaeology or geography.
Anthropology is a department within the College of Arts and Sciences, the University's oldest academic unit. The college of Arts and Sciences provides the foundation for all of the University's undergraduate students and offers outstanding preparation for graduate and professional programs.

Anthropology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Anthropology is the study of humankind (see genus Homo ). It is holistic in two senses: it is concerned with all humans at all times, and with all dimensions of humanity. Central to anthropology is the concept of culture , and the notion that human nature is culture; that our species has evolved a universal capacity to conceive of the world symbolically , to teach and learn such symbols socially, and to transform the world (and ourselves) based on such symbols. In the United States anthropology is traditionally divided into four fields:
