69. Sociology And Anthropolgy At The College Of Wooster
Sociology and anthropology (Wooster, OH)
http://www.wooster.edu/sociology/
Home Page The basic challenge in sociology and anthropology is to understand ourselves and others more fully. Both disciplines ask us to probe beneath the surface and to question why people behave as they do, especially in group situations. The sociological perspective asks us to question the taken-for-granted, to ask why our society operates as it does and how our social arrangements could be different. Similarly, anthropologists hope that by understanding other cultures, we can come to a better understanding of our own culture and, eventually, of ourselves.
The Sociology/Anthropology program at Wooster stresses, above all, the value of learning how to deal with contemporary social issues and how to develop problem-solving and research skills, including the use of computers. Over the past few years droughts have plagued several countries in the Middle East and South Asia. The hardest hit have been India, Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) estimated that 130 million people - or roughly 15 percent of India's population - were seriously affected by a severe drought in 2001-2002.

Introduction
The Ur-List: Web Resources for Visual Anthropology facilitates web searches by cross-indexing three hundred and seventy-five anthropological sites according to the categories of information they contain. The Ur-List's cross-index is more accurate than most Web-resource guides which typically reduce a site's multifaceted content to only one category. In the Ur-List, sites may be accessed according to the twenty-two subject-categories listed above. Multifaceted sites are cross-referenced under all appropriate categories. A mouse-click selection of any of the subject-categories gives access to two kinds of Web resources. The first is dedicated exclusively to the subject that was selected. For example, Wendy Vissar's dark visual ethnography of rural Albania, Lekso's Codebox is listed only once under the "Dedicated Sites" heading of "Visual Ethnographies" (Category 5). The second kind of resources accessed are listed under multiple Ur-List categories.
