Zeno met the young Socrates in 449 when he accompanied his teacher Parmenides to Athens. Zeno was tortured to death ( c. 435) for taking part in a political conspiracy against the city's tyrant Nearchus.

Zeno of Elea and his Paradoxes By Billy Carlile and Hedley Stothers Background Zeno born in Elea, Lucania (southwest Italy), at about 490-485 B.C. Was a presocratic anti-pluralist philosopher contribution was purely negative proved that pluralist assumptions lead to (supposedly) inescapable paradoxes pluralism = belief that reality consists of more than one ultimate things proved that motion is paradoxical Was disciple and (perhaps intimate) friend of Parmenides, who was pro-monism indirectly aided arguments of Parmenides by negating those of opponents monism = belief that reality is single, changeless and homogeneous Was ‘first dialectician’ dialectic = art or practice of arriving at the truth by the exchange of logical arguments Was one of first to employ reductionism reductionism = the analysis of complex things into simpler constituents distances, objects, etc. defined by smaller distances, objects, etc. recursion Logic followed the following type of path: If anything at all is divisible, then whatever is extended is divisible. Plurality axiomatic system for reality Divisibility axioms and rules of formal system Thing string in formal system Divisible thing theorem of axiomatic system Indivisible thing (atom) nontheorem of axiomatic system Four key paradoxes of Zeno

The flavour of the paradoxes is given by the proof that motion is impossible. In order the traverse a line segment it is necessary to reach its midpoint. To do this one must reach the 1/4 point, to do this one must reach the 1/8 point and so on ad infinitum. Hence motion can never begin. The paradoxes were important in the development of the notion of infinitesimals. ZENO of Elea Greek philosopher - 5th century BC Zeno was a follower of Parmenides. Parmenides asserted that the one unchanging Being was the ultimate reality. Zeno, in his Paradoxes, tryied to prove the absurdity of believing that reality is made up of many changing things. He argued that if a thing moves, it must move either where it is or where it is not. But it cannot move where it is, because there it is at rest. Nor can it move where it is not, because it doesn't even exist there. So, he concluded, motion is absurde. Zeno of Elea
(490 - 430 BC) Italy
Philosopher Zeno was possibly born in the city-state Elea (or Hyele, or Velia) a colony founded in Oenotria (i.e. actual Italy) by refugees from Phocia in 540-39 B.C. Disciple of the philosopher Parmenides and one of the Eleatic school, whose paradoxes raised "modern" problems of space and time, for example, Achiles can never overtake a tortoise in a race if the amount of space each contestant still has to cover can be infinitely divided; whenever he reaches where the tortoise was, the tortoise will have moved just ahead of him. Plato says that Parmenides went to Athens in his sixty-fifth year, accompaniedby Zeno, and conversed with Socrates, who was then quite young. Zeno was the lover of his master Parmenides. In a text we read, Parmenides and Zeno went together to Athens at the great Panathenaean festival; the former was, at the time of his visit, about 65 years old, very white with age, but well-favored. Zeno was nearly 40 years of age, of a noble figure and fair aspect; and in the days of his youth he was reported to have been the beloved of Parmenides.

ZENO of Elea
Ancient Greece, c. 449 BC ZENO (concluding): ...And so, through various irrefutable examples, I have succeeded in proving that motion does not exist.
MAN: Hold on a second. Motion doesn't exist?
ZENO: That's right. You see, if space can be divided into an infinite number of divisions, it will take an infinite amount of time to traverse them all. Therefore, all motion is just an illusion. The Olympic Games ANNOUNCER: And the runners are off! Achilles, the favorite from Parnassus, has taken an early lead...but oh, wait a second! He seems to be taking an infinite amount of time to cross the first yard of the track, as if movement itself were somehow impossible in a non-Parmenidean context! It looks like this veteran sprinter is headed for another heartbreak.
ZENO (in the stands): I can't believe I bought tickets for this. The Athenian Senate SENATOR: I move that we adjourn until tomorrow.
ZENO: Motion denied. (Giggles.)
SENATOR: That's what you always say. In Line at the Multiplex GIRL: This is great I haven't been to the movies since "Schindler's List." Wasn't that film incredibly moving?
ZENO: Moving? Mmmmm...No, I don't think so.

Return to Vignettes of Ancient Mathematics Zeno's arguments on the Size of a Body Zeno's arguments on Motion
  • Arguments on the Size of a Body (assuming continuity and divisibility)
Step 1 (Zeno, frag. DK : For if it were added to another thing," he says, "it would not make it larger. For given it has not size, when it is added it could not contribute anything to its magnitude. And so what is added in this way would be nothing. If when it is removed, the other would be not be any smaller, and when added the other is not increased, it is clear that what is added isn't anything and what is removed isn't either. Step 2 (Zeno, frag. DK : Having first proved that "if the existent does not have magnitude it would not exist," he infers that "if it is, each thing must have some size and bulk, and that one part of it can be apart from another. And with regard to what there is at this stage , the same argument follows. For that will have size and some part of it will be there at this stage

    • c. 490 = c. 430 B.C. Interview Constructed by Geoff Anders '98. Spring 1997. Interviewer: Hello, Zeno! A pleasure to make your acquaintance! Zeno of Elea I: Zeno? Z: I: ZENO? Can't you hear me? Z: Well, I suppose I perceive that I hear you... but it's only an illusion. I: An illusion?
Z: Of course. In order to hear you, there would have to be a change from a state of no sound to a state of sound, which, as we all know, is impossible.
I: Impossible? Really? How so? Z : Well, imagine a extremely small piece of wood dropping. Does it make a sound? No. So now imagine two extremely small pieces of wood. That would be two simultaneous occurrences, neither of which produce sound. Extend the argument... even a trillion pieces of wood would not make a sound, because one trillion times zero is no greater than two times zero. I: Oh... I see. But then how is it that I hear you and you hear me? Z: It's just an illusion. I: That's very interesting Zeno... Tell me - are there any other illusions other than sound?
