    Distinguished scholars join University faculty
s 12 new Professors include winner of Fields Medal Efim Zelmanov, winner of the 1994 Fields Medal considered the world's most prestigious prize in mathematics heads a list of distinguished scholars joining the University faculty this fall. Among the new faculty members are eminent scholars in law, the humanities, the social sciences and the physical sciences. "We are delighted to have such outstanding people as new faculty members," said Provost Geoffrey Stone. "The expertise in research and teaching that these scholars will bring to the University will enhance our already distinguished faculty." Below are brief profiles of the new faculty members who have joined the University as full Professors. PHYSICAL SCIENCES DIVISION Joining the Physical Sciences Division are Zelmanov and Victor Ginzburg, both mathematicians from the former Soviet Union, as well as statistician Peter Donnelly, an expert in probability, applied probability and population genetics. Zelmanov was honored for his work in the field of abstract algebra, including group theory, and specifically for his solution of the Restricted Burnside Problem, where he showed that certain mathematical constructs known as periodic groups are finite.

What makes a group infinite?
Efim Zelmanov , professor of Mathematics, Yale University, was awarded the Fields Medal (the mathematical analogue of the Nobel Prize) in 1994 for his seminal contributions to group theory. He will inaugurate the Howard Rowlee Lecture series with two lectures.
What makes a group infinite?
Given a group presented by generators and relations, how can we say if it is finite or infinite? In 1964 Golod and Shafarevich suggested asufficient condition for such a group to be infinite. Zelmanov will discuss groups satisfying the Golod-Shafarevich condition.
On growth of algebras
Zelmanov will discuss the notion of growth (Gelfand-Kirillov dimension) of algebras and some important examples of infinite dimensional algebrasof small growth.
The Howard Rowlee Lecture series is made possible through a generous donation by Mr. Howard E. Rowlee, Jr., who has established a fund at the University of Nebraska Foundation to support research in mathematics. The inaugural lectures in this series are also supported by the College of Arts and Sciences Discrete and Experimental Mathematics program and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
Schedule
First Lecture: April 29, 1997, Bessey Hall Auditorium, 4:00-5:00pm, Reception: 3:15-4:00, Bessey Hall 108

Howard Rowlee Lecture Series The Howard Rowlee Lecture series is made possible through a generous donation by Mr. Howard E. Rowlee, Jr., a Lincoln resident and friend of the Department, who has established a fund at the University of Nebraska Foundation to support research in mathematics. The Howard Rowlee Lecture is an annual event which seeks to bring internationally acclaimed scholars in the mathematical sciences to UNL to promote public understanding of mathematical research and to stimulate the environment for mathematics research at UNL. The inaugural Howard Rowlee Lecture was given in 1997 by Efim Zelmanov, Professor of Mathematics at Yale University and the winner of the Fields Medal in 1994 for his seminal contributions to algebra. The 8th Howard Rowlee Lecture (2004) will be given by Donald Saari, University of California, Irvine Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and Economics. Professor Saari is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, a fellow of AAAS, and a Guggenheim Fellow. He is the recipient of many honors and awards including the Allendoerfer Award, the Chauvenet Prize, and the Lester R. Ford Award, all of which are awarded by the Mathematical Association of America. At UCI he is the Director of the Institute for Mathematical Behavioral Sciences and the Director of the Center for Decision Analysis. Additional information is available at Professor SaariÕs web site http://math.uci.edu/~dsaari/. Generous support for the 8th Howard Rowlee Lecture is provided by the UNL Research Council which has designated Professor SaariÕs lecture as the 2004 Tom Osborn Visiting Lecturer and the UNL Department of Mathematics.

From December 4 to 5, Prof. Efim Zelmanov, who has awarded a Fields Medal in 1994, visited POSTECH for the 7th A-un Lecture. Prof. Zelmanov had three lectures in English for two days to POSTECH students and professors; Abstract Algebra in the 20th Century, Infinite Dimensional Algebras, and Profinite Groups.
Prof. Zelmanov was born in Russia in 1955, and he attended Novosibirsk State University, obtaining his Ph.D. degree in 1980. He has taught at Oxford University, the University of Chicago, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and presently he teaches at Yale University. In addition, he became a tenure professor at the Korea Institute of Advanced Study in 1996.
In 1987 Prof. Zelmanov solved one of the big open questions in the theory of Lie algebras. He proved that the Engel identity ad(y)n = implies that the algebra is necessarily nilpotent. This was a classical result for finite dimensional Lie algebras but he solved a big open problem when he proved that the result also held for infinite dimensional Lie algebras. In 1991, he went on to settle one of the most fundamental results in the theory of groups that had occupied group theorists throughout the 20th century. He solved the restricted Burnside problem. In 1994 Prof. Zelmanov was awarded a Fields Medal for these achievements at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich. In addition to the Fields Medal, Prof. Zelmanov has received other honors for his outstanding works. He received the College de France Medal in January 1992 and the Andre Aizenstadt Prize in May 1996.
