In this topology, named after oscar zariski, the closed sets are the sets consistingof the mutual zeroes of a set of polynomials. (See affine varieties).

Zariski topology
In mathematics , the Zariski topology is a structure basic to algebraic geometry , especially since 1950. In this topology , named after Oscar Zariski , the closed sets are the sets consisting of the mutual zeroes of a set of polynomials . (See affine varieties
Remarks
This definition indicates the kind of space that can be given a Zariski topology: for example, we define the Zariski topology on an n-dimensional vector space F n over a field F, using the definition above. That this definition yields a true topology is easily verified. Using the Noetherian property of the ring of polynomials over F, one sees that any closed set is the set of zeroes of a finite set of equations. The Zariski topology given to some finite-dimensional vector space doesn't depend on the specific basis chosen; for that reason it is an intrinsic structure. It is usually regarded as belonging to the underlying affine space , since it is also invariant by translations. One can generalise the definition of Zariski topology to projective spaces , and so to any algebraic variety as subsets of these. The general case of the Zariski topology is based on the

Scheme (mathematics)
Database will be offline for 2 hours at 0:00 UTC to setup a slave server In mathematics , a scheme is an important concept connecting the fields of algebraic geometry commutative algebra and number theory . Schemes were introduced by Alexander Grothendieck so as to broaden the notion of algebraic variety ; some consider schemes to be the basic object of study of modern algebraic geometry. Technically, a scheme is a topological space together with commutative rings for all its open sets, which arises from "gluing together" spectra (spaces of prime ideals ) of commutative rings.
History and motivation
The algebraic geometers of the Italian school had often used the somewhat foggy concept of "generic point" when proving statements about algebraic varieties . What is true for the generic point is true for all points of the variety except a small number of special points. In the Emmy Noether had first suggested a way to clarify the concept: start with the coordinate ring of the variety (the ring of all polynomial functions defined on the variety); the maximal ideals of this ring will correspond to ordinary points of the variety (under suitable conditions), and the non-maximal prime ideals will correspond to the various generic points. By taking all prime ideals, one thus gets the whole collection of ordinary and generic points. Noether did not pursue this approach.

Honorary Doctorate Degree for Shreeram S. Abhyankar
On 29 October 1998, Professor Shreeram S. Abhyankar of Purdue University was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree (Docteur Honoris Causa) by the University of Angers in France. The Congratulatory Message sent by the Fields Medalist Professor Heisuke Hironaka for that occasion is reproduced below, followed by the Eulogy given by Professor Jean Michel Granger of the University of Angers at the award ceremony.
    Message from Professor Heisuke Hironaka
Dear Ram: Your long and powerful works deserve far more than the honorary doctorate you are receiving. Even so, I am happy to hear the good news. Your originality has been a gold mine for many other algebraic geometers, including myself. Now the mined gold is receiving rays of sunlight, facets after facets. Very best, Hei Hironaka

The New Geometry: or the Marriage of Number and Magnitude.
But here I am, digressing again! I set out to talk about the "master-themes", with the intention of unifying them under one "mother vision", like so many rivers returning to the Ocean whose children they are.. This great unifying vision might be described as a new geometry . It appears to be similar to the one that Kronecker dreamed of a century ago(*) But the reality is ( which a bold dream may sometimes reveal, or encourage us to discover) surpasses in every respect in richness and resonance even the boldest and most profound dream. Of a certainty, for more than one of these revelations of the new geometry, ( if not for all of them), nobody, the day before it appoeared, could have imagined it - neither the worker nor anyone else. One might say that "Number" is what is appropriate for grasping the structure of "discontinuous" or "discrete" aggregates. These systems, often finite, are formed from "elements", or "objects" conceived of as isolated with respect to one another. "Magnitude" on the other hand is the quality, above all, susceptible to "continuous variation", and is most appropriate for grasping continous structures and phenomena: motion, space, varieties in all their forms, force fields, etc. Thereby , Arithmetic appears to be ( overall) the
