William was his parents' eldest son and he was brought up by his parents as a Baptist. He attended the City of London School where the headmaster was particularly fascinated by mathematics. This headmaster was Edwin A Abott, who was the author of the famous popular mathematical work Flatland. He immediately saw the potential that Young had for mathematics and he encouraged him in that direction. In 1881 Young entered Peterhouse, Cambridge, to begin his undergraduate studies of mathematics. At Cambridge Young was an outstanding student showing far more mathematical ability than any of the other students in his year. However to achieve the position of First Wrangler (the top position in the list of First Class graduates) in the Mathematical Tripos required enormous dedication and training in the type of examination questions set in the Tripos. It would be fair to say that the First Wrangler was the most skilled at answering Tripos questions rather than the best mathematician and many of the great mathematicians who attended Cambridge failed to gain this distinction. Young was one such student for he made a very conscious decision that becoming First Wrangler was less important to him than having varied interests, both academic and sporting, at university. He was fourth wrangler in 1884. While at Cambridge he put aside the Baptist religion of his family and was baptised into the Church of England.

That album will, almost certainly, outsell "Inspiration," the first recording by "Idol" reject William Hung. However, the finalists will have had to go to all the extra trouble of knowing how to sing, while Hung has hit the charts just being himself. Hung's album debuted at No. 34 on the latest Billboard 200 pop albums chart. Early estimates actually had insiders guessing that Hung would debut in the Top 30, based on sales of between 30,000 and 40,000 copies. While that debut came in more than 400,000 records behind Usher's chart-topping "Confessions," it was nearly on par with the latest release by future "Idol" guest judge Barry Manilow. The undertalented Hung was a University of California, Berkeley civil engineering major when he went to the San Francisco try-outs for FOX's popular talent show. His hilariously off-key performance and gracious acceptance of judge Simon Cowell's insults won him a legion of fans. Hung signed a contract with Koch Records in March. At the time, Alan Grunblatt, the company's general manager and executive vice president, described him as "The New Elvis."

Thomas died in Berkeley, California, December 5, 1947. He was born August 13, 1863 on a farm in Russell County, Virginia. His father, Thaddeus Peter Thomas, combined preaching and farming for His interests, however, began to turn to sociology and psychology and during the academic year, 1893-1894, Thomas spent two quarters on a fellowship in the newly founded department of sociology at the University of Chicago, studying with Albion W. Small and Charles R. Henderson. Although he continued at Oberlin on a half-year basis till 1895, in 1894 he began giving courses there in sociology. In 1895 he accepted an instructorship in sociology at Chicago and in the year following completed his doctorate. Shortly thereafter he was appointed assistant professor. His promotion to an associate professorship came in 1900, and his full professorship a decade later. Thomas' first professional writing had to do with sex differences, especially role and status, as affected by custom and institution. His various papers on the topic comprise the content of his first published work

Log Book of the Young William James Mortlock (Ship's Master) This page gives more details of the log book of the Young William as it relates to the discovery by of both sets of islands in the Pacific referred to on some maps as the Mortlock Islands. These Islands had no doubt been already discovered and inhabited by Pacific Islanders, and possibly also discovered by other non English speaking nations. This page refers to the first recorded discovery by users of the English language. The Young William left London on 11th of September 1794, headed for Port Jackson in New South Wales (Australia) and then China. Port Jackson is today better known as Sydney harbour. The log book records that in Port Jackson on Monday 26th October 1795, that Ralf Greeve and George Williamson were absent without leave. With permission of the Govenor the following people were shipped - William Burges, Rudd, Charles Cornish and Edward Willen. Prior to departing Port Jackson on the 28th of October 1795, the Young William was searched for convict stowaways. Three male convicts were found and based on information received, a female convict was found in the Chief Mate's chest. The Chief Mate was discharged at his own request. The first set of Mortlock Islands, also known as the Takuu group were sighted on 19th November 1795.
