Grace Chisholm Young (1864-1944) : The English-born Young was one of the first to demonstrate applications of set theory to problems in mathematical analysis. She overcame considerable prejudice against women to achieve a Ph.D. in mathematics from Gottingen University in Germany in 1895. Her most distinguished work appears in a group of papers published from 1914 to 1916 in which she presented and developed theories and concepts in differential calculus. She worked with her husband, English mathematician William Young (1863-1942) on more than 200 articles and books. In 1905, she published a geometry book that included many paper-folding patterns for three-dimensional models. In 1906, her publication The Theory of Sets of Points , demonstrated applications of set theory to problems in mathematical analysis. Young was a well-loved, generous woman with a variety of talents and tremendous energy.

Felix Christian Klein Born: Died: Click the picture above to see four larger pictures Show birthplace location Previous (Chronologically) Next Biographies Index Previous (Alphabetically) Next Main index Felix Klein is best known for his work in non-euclidean geometry , for his work on the connections between geometry and group theory , and for results in function theory. He was born on 25/4/1849 and delighted in pointing out that each of the day (5 ), month (2 ), and year (43 ) was the square of a prime. Klein's father was secretary to the head of the government. There is a colourful description of Felix's birth in his obituary in the Proceedings of the Royal Society:- Without, the cannon thundered on the barricades raised by the insurgent Rhinelanders against their hated Prussian rulers. Within, although all had been prepared for flight, there was no thought of departure; on that night was born a son to the stern Prussian secretary. That son was Felix Klein. The revolution against the Prussians, which resulted in such a dramatic birth for Felix Klein, was completely crushed by the summer of 1849. Klein attended the Gymnasium in 1866.

The Young Dolphins' History The Young Dolphins were established in 1983. Barbara McColl, Helen Forrester and Sue Sumpter were the tutors. Sue taught the 8-10 year olds, Helen the 11-13 year olds and Barbara 13 plus, and there were a total of 18 pupils. Each year, with the assistance of many parents plus Alan Stokes and Johnny Johnston they provided one public show night. By 1984 the roll had risen to 30 pupils and saw both Helen and Barbara leaving and the arrival of Jill Hemmings to assist Sue for a short time. In 1985 Sue was the sole tutor, and fees were introduced for the first time to cover basic material costs and the roll was now 45 pupils. Sue directed a three night season with the Dolphin Theatre acting as producer. 1986 saw the giddy heights of 54 pupils and Jan Saussey and Dorothy Chisholm assisted with the classes, later to be joint directors for that year's production which had a three night season. At this time, Sue Sumpter left and moved to Wellington. Jan and Dorothy became joint tutors. Dorothy Chisholm became Director Of Speech and Drama and Jan Saussey became Director Of Creative Movement. There were then established strict guidelines for the classes and behaviour, along with certificates of achievement. The year was 1987 and the roll now reached 105.
