2001 SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME
Workshop CMI Symposium and EuroWorkshop on Hamiltonian Systems
23 May to 1 June 2001
Scientific Organising Committee:
Dario Bambusi (Milan),
Walter Craig (McMaster),
Sergei Kuksin (Heriot-Watt),
Eugene Wayne (Boston)
Supported by:
The Clay Mathematical Institute and the European Commission
(Framework 5)
This workshop built on an ICMS meeting on the same theme in 1999 and a similar format was followed: formal presentations in the mornings leaving the majority of the afternoons free for impromptu working seminars and discussions. Once more the organisers found that this format and the intimate atmosphere of 14 India Street made for a highly successful combination. This success was demonstrated when two lectures, by Eliasson and Groves, reported research which was initiated during discussions begun at the 1999 meeting. Several broad themes emerged during the meeting. The first was an increasing interest in and understanding of the dynamics of Hamiltonian systems in the presence of continuous spectra, such as arise when considering partial differential equations on unbounded domains. The continuous spectrum in the linearisation of these equations can lead to dramatically different behaviours from those which have been studied in finite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems, or indeed in infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems whose linearisation has discrete spectrum (such as arise from partial differential equations on bounded domains). The lectures by Deift and Weinstein emphasised these differences.

2000 SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME
Workshop on Dynamical Systems
(A satellite meeting of the XIII International Congress in Mathematical Physics)
Organisers:
Konstantin Khanin (Isaac Newton Institute/Heriot-Watt University),
Robert MacKay (Warwick) and
Mark Pollicott (Manchester)
Scientific Committee
S Aubry (France),
L Bunimovich (USA),
J-P Eckmann (Switzerland), H Eliasson (Sweden), M Herman (France), A Kupiainen (Finland), J Palis (Brazil), D Ruelle (France), L Shilnikov (Russia), Ya Sinai (Russia), M Viana (Brazil), L-S Young (USA) Supported by: The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, The European Science Foundation Programme on Probabilistic Methods in Non-Hyperbolic Dynamics (PRODYN), and The London Mathematical Society. The topic of dynamical systems is a frontier area between mathematics and physics. It is closely connected with the theory of differential equations, ergodic theory, probability theory and other branches of mathematics. It also has many applications in Hamiltonian mechanics, nonlinear optics and theory of turbulence. The last two decades have seen a period of intensive development of the theory of dynamical systems in connection with the concept of dynamical chaos and the methods created have proved very useful for the analysis of nonlinear phenomena in nature and society. The motivation of this Workshop was to examine the mathematical problems in dynamical systems, map out possible directions in the development of the theory in the near future and illustrate some applications in mathematical physics. The Organisers invited over 50 experts, including many from Europe who were supported by the European Science Foundation Programme.

Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
Some suggestions on the historical perspective might be:
(a) Any wars etc.
(b) Scientific breakthroughs of the time
(c) Major discoveries of the time
(d) How did this mathematician change history etc.

Recent developments in dynamics. jeanchristophe yoccoz (UniversitéParis-Sud, Orsay, France). Many properties of a transformation
http://www.ams.org/mathweb/icm94/plen.yoccoz.html
Recent developments in dynamics
Jean-Christophe Yoccoz Let us call in a loose way quasiperiodic those dynamical features associated to irrational rotations, and hyperbolic those associated with Bernoulli shifts. The study of dynaimcal systems is mostly an effort to extend the scope of hyperbolic and quasiperiodic phenomena in order to cover "most" of the dynamics of "most" systems. Starting with Siegel's linearization theorem in 1942, KAM theory deals with the persistence of quasiperiodic motions smoothly conjugated to irrational rotations. In the simplest case of holomorphic germs in one complex variable, Siegel's Diophantine condition was extended by Bruno; I proved that Bruno's condition is optimal. The geometric construction involved in the last result has been successfully generalized by Perez-Marco in order to get a grasp on some aspects of the non linearizable case. In higher dimensions, Arnold's linearization theorem of analytic perturbations of rotations holds under Bruno's condition, but the optimal condition is unknown, and probably different. Recent results of Herman emphasize that the importance of Diophantine invaraint tori is far from restricted to the classical symplectic setting; based on a persistence theorem for codimension one invariant tori, he disproves the quasiergodic hypothesis and a conjecture of Pesin asserting the existence of a non zero Lyapunov exponent for volume preserving diffeomorphisms.
