    Winner of Fields Medal
    Harvard University, USA
    Abstract
The status and the future of mathematics will be reviewed, and the role and applications of mathematics in various subjects such as physics, engineering, information technology, and economics will be discussed.
    About the Speaker ... ...
Professor Yau, Shing Tung is the world renowned mathematician who is the only Chinese being awarded the Fields Medal (the Fields Medal has played the role of the Nobel Prize in Mathematics). The Fields Medal (1982) is a formal recognition for his contributions in the partial differential equations, the Calabi conjecture in algebraic geometry, the positive mass conjecture of general relativity theory, and the real and complex Monge-Ampere equations. Prof. Yau was born in Shantou in 1949, and then immigrated to Hong Kong. After graduating from Pui Ching Middle School in 1966, he completed his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He studied for his doctorate at the University of California at Berkeley and received his Ph.D. in 1971. Between 1971 and 1987 he held appointments at a number of institutions, including Stanford University (1974-79), the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, N.J. (1979-84), and the University of California, San Diego (1984-87). He is now a Professor of Mathematics at Harvard University and has joint appointments as Professor of Mathematics of the Chinese University and the Director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMS) in the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Speech by Professor Iu Vai Pan,
    Rector of University of Macau,
at the Closing Ceremony of UM 20 th Anniversary,
University of Macau, 16 June 2002
    Distinguished Guests,
    Alumni,
    Colleagues,
    Students,
    Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is a great honour for me to be here today to announce the closing of our university's 20 th anniversary. Last year, we launched a kick-off ceremony in our campus as the first activity to commence our 20-year anniversary. To the university, this closing ceremony is certainly meaningful and important. During the past 13 months, under the theme of 20 th anniversary, we held many celebratory functions, at all levels in the university. Not only our university, but also the community at large, and many institutions at overseas are aware of the 20 years of establishment of the University of Macau. There are many discussions I have shared, and many comments I have received, on the past, present, and most important, the future role of this leading academic institution in Macau. This observation has given me a clear focus of our future work. As in the case for many parts of the world, the political, economic, and social conditions in Macao as a whole have changed. A knowledge-based society has a lot to offer to young people. However, these opportunities do not come without high competition and great challenges. We strive to help our young people learn wisdom and diversity to serve and build the community, acquire knowledge to be geared to tackle challenges, and possess essential humanity to bring compassion and benefits of competition to the society. This objective is recognized from the active involvement of many of our alumni working in management and policy-making level in both public and private sectors.

Refreshments will be served. Prof. Yau's Biography Prof. Yau, who came to Harvard in 1987, was cited for "profound contributions to mathematics that have had a great impact on fields as diverse as topology, algebraic geometry, general relativity, and string theory. His work insightfully combines two different mathematical approaches and has resulted in the solution of several longstanding and important problems in mathematics." The National Medal of Science can be added to his long list of other prizes. He won a MacArthur "genius" award in 1985 and the Fields Medal, the highest honor in mathematics, in 1982. Yau, whose field combines differential geometry and partial differential equations, received the National Medal of Science for his impact on fields as diverse as topology, algebraic geometry, general relativity, and string theory. Yau's combination of two different mathematical approaches has resulted in the solution of several longstanding and important problems in mathematics. Previously, his collaborative work has used the positivist of space-time and the condensation of matter to explain the problems of relativity theory and black holes. Related Publications:
