Group Invariant Solutions and Symmetric Criticality
Lie's method of symmetry reduction for finding the group invariant solutions to partial differential equations is widely recognized as one of the most general and effective methods for obtaining exact solutions of non-linear partial differential equations. In recent years Lie's method has been described in a number of excellent texts and survey articles (see, for example, Bluman and Kumei [3], Olver [5], Ovsiannikov [6], Stephani [9]) and has been systematically applied to differential equations arising in a broad spectrum of disciplines (see, for example, Ibragimov [4] or Rogers and Shadwick [8]). It is therefore quite surprising that Lie's method as it is conventionally described, does not provide an appropriate theoretical framework for the derivation of such celebrated invariant solutions as the Schwarzschild solution of the vacuum Einstein equations, the instanton and monopole solutions in Yang-Mills theory or the Veronese map for the harmonic map equations.
In my first lecture I shall describe the elementary steps needed to correct this deficiency in the classical Lie method, and to give a precise formulation of the reduced differential equations for the group invariant solutions which arise from this generalization.

Abstract:

In the past thirty years, differential geometry has received a lot of impact from ideas of physics, particularly from general relativity, gauge theory and string theory. Professor Yau will talk about some of these developments, both past and current. Some open questions may be discussed. Background:
Shing-Tung Yau is universally regarded as the greatest differential geometer of his generation. His profound work has impacted such diverse fields as topology, algebraic geometry, general relativity, and string theory. Yau was born in China in 1949. In 1982, he was awarded the Fields medal for his contributions to partial differential equations, to the Calabi conjecture in algebraic geometry, to the positive mass conjecture of general relativity, and to real and complex Monge-Ampere equations. In 1997, he was awarded the National Medal of Science, the highest scientific honor in the US. He has won numerous awards and honors and is a member of several scientific academies. He is currently at Harvard.

Fields Medal
Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

Stony Brook, at Stanford University, at the Institute for Advanced Study, at the University of California at San Diego, and at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1987 he was appointed Professor of Mathematics at Harvard University, a position he has held ever since.
His fields of research are differential geometry, differential equations and general relativity. He has received the highest awards for his outstanding contributions. Besides the Fields Medal (1982), he was awarded the Veblen Prize (1981), the Carty Prize of the National Academy (1981), the Crafoord Prize of the Royal Swedish Academy(1994), and the National Medal of Science, U.S.A. (1997). In 1979, he was elected California Scientist of the year. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, ot the Chinese Academy of Sciences, of the Academia Sinica, and of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He has received four honorary doctorates and he is an honorary professor of many universities.
