The UK based Restaurant, Hotel and Wine Review
Sir Christopher Wren's House Hotel in Windsor
Windsor is a tourist town dominated by the famous castle which is allegedly HM The Queen's favourite residence. That's when she's not at Buck House, Sandringham or Balmoral. The town is not really known as a mecca for gourmets or foodies and there are probably only about four or five restaurants that could be considered worthy of more than a passing interest. One hopes the Royal kitchens are in another league, but few of us are likely to receive the summons. However, in our constant desire to seek out places for Dine on Line readers that are excellent value, the odd gem does pop up out of the blue, and the Sir Christopher Wren's House Hotel overlooking the Thames fits the bill. More than 300 years after Sir Kit built the house as his own private retreat, it is still alive with history. The hotel now serves many functions as a hotel, conference centre, wedding location and plenty more. There are 70 bedrooms with all the luxurious modern amenities jostling with the old as in some of the suites with their four poster beds. The hotel has its own private car park which is very important in Windsor, especially in the summer. Strok's Restaurant is named after a famous Croatian racing driver who has sunk a small fortune into the hotel to make it one of the top hotels in the Thames Valley. This is not a bad place at all for a weekend break because the hotel has its own boat which enables guests to take champagne cruises on the Thames for anything from 1/2 hour to a four hour mini-cruise. What better way could there be than to spend a summer afternoon with a bottle of champagne cruising up to Taplow, or even farther?

    Architecture for Kids
Christopher Wren Sir Christopher Wren was an English architect, astronomer, and mathematician. After the great London fire in 1666, he produced a master plan for the rebuilding of London, which was never executed because rebuilting started immediately and before his plan could be considered. He designed many new buildings, however, most notably St. Paul's Cathedral. From 1670 to 1711, he executed 52 London churches, noted for their varied and original designs and fine spires. One is St. Mary-le-Bow. Among his secular works were the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford, Trinity College Library in Cambridge, and Chelsea Hospital in London. His buildings exhibit great elegance, clarity, and dignity. His work had tremendous influence on American architects, especially Francis Nicholas who used Wren's plan for London to design the city of Williamsburg in Virginia. The public buildings, including the Governor's Palace and the College of William and Mary, were greatly influenced by Wren.
