Woodward, Robert Burns (1917 - 1979) American chemist Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Woodward was educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, obtaining his PhD in 1937. His whole career was spent at Harvard where, starting as a postdoctoral fellow in 1937, he became Morris Loeb Professor of Chemistry in 1953. In 1944 Woodward, with William von Eggers Doering, synthesized quinine from the basic elements. This was an historic moment for it was the quinine molecule that William Perkin had first, somewhat prematurely, attempted to synthesize in 1855. Woodward and his school later succeeded in synthesizing an impressive number of molecules, many of which are important far beyond the field of chemistry. Thus among the most important were cholesterol and cortisone in 1951, strychnine and LSD in 1954, reserpine in 1956, chlorophyll in 1960, a tetracycline antibiotic in 1962, and vitamin B12 in 1971. The work on the synthesis of B12 led Woodward and Roald Hoffman to introduce the principle of conservation of orbital symmetry. This major theoretical advance has provided a deep understanding of a wide group of chemical reactions. He received the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1965. Woodward's death in 1979 deprived him of a second Nobel award, namely, the chemistry prize awarded to his colleague Hoffmann in 1981 for their work on orbital theory.

The Robert Woodward Memorial Fund All Souls Church On Sunday December 2, 2001 just before he morning service was to begin, Robert Woodward burst into the church agitated, afraid and pleading for sanctuary from those who he believed would put him in jail and torture him. Unable to calm him in order to make sense of the situation, the police were called to remove him. Instead they took his life. As we have come to know more about Bob Woodward, we have learned that he loved children, helped them professionally, and he loved the environment which he also worked to preserve. He practiced what he preached, walking everywhere, riding a bike whenever he could and using his car as seldom as possible. He did not collect things, he lived simply collecting friends instead. Keeping these attributes in mind, the Board of Trustees of All Souls Church has decided to establish the Raobert Woodward Memorial Fund both to preserve his memory and to honor his commitment to the natural world he loved so much. After a sufficient time has passed, donations to the fund will be turned into a single check and presented to the Vermont Natural Resources Council, a non profit environmental organization founded in 1963 to protect Vermont's natural resources and environment through research, education and advocacy. Since " Woody" as his friends called him, lived and died in Vermont, we believe this is a fitting memorial. Several friends and particularly Mr. And Mrs. Paul Woodward have been consulted, and believe this is the right thing to do. If you agree, won't you join us by sending a contribution to the fund. Checks should be made out to the Robert Woodward memorial Fund and mailed to All Souls Church, P.O. Box 2297, West Brattleboro, VT. 05303 Robert S. The Shooting of Robert Woodward
By keith harmon snow
On December 2, 2001, 37-year-old Robert A. Woodward entered the All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Brattleboro, Vermont. Parishioners of this peace-loving church who were waiting for the 10 a.m. service to begin instead heard from the weeping stranger, standing at the altar podium, who spoke about the environment and civil rights and his fears of being hunted down, tortured and killed by the FBI. "If the police are called," eyewitnesses recount Woodward saying, "I will be killed." Children were soon taken outside and at 10:04 a.m. church president Charles Butterfield placed a 911 call from his office. According to Butterfield he requested that plainclothes officers be dispatched. He related that Woody was "deathly afraid" of authorities, and that he had a knife and was threatening to take his own life. Using very specific language, the tearful Woodward begged the church for protection. A political activist awake to the FBI and CIA’s histories of human rights atrocities and clandestine political repression, Woodward had made a rational choice based on the history of the Unitarian church in providing sanctuary for asylum seekers. (For example, in the 1980s, the Unitarian church aided refugees from Latin America.)

Distorting Bob Woodward
WASHINGTON (Creators Syndicate) Did President Bush really brief Prince Bandar on his Iraq war plans before he informed Colin Powell? Did the Saudi ambassador really cut a deal with the Bush administration to increase oil production in time for the presidential election? The answer to both questions is no, but those allegations entered the election-year bloodstream thanks to distortion of Bob Woodward's "Plan of Attack." The crack investigative reporter's latest blockbuster does not make those allegations, but still became instant Democratic talking points, employed by presidential candidate John Kerry himself. In contrast, Woodward's revelation of Saudi Arabia's support for the Iraq invasion went virtually unmentioned. Judging by published excerpts, news accounts and even some of Woodward's comments on television, "Plan of Attack" is of a piece with kiss-and-tell anti-Bush memoirs on the best-seller list. The full 443-page text, however, portrays George W. Bush as a conscientious, well-informed leader presiding over a military team that devised an ingenious attack plan.

Robert Woodward stood at the pinnacle of success in both academics and athletics. Then a brain tumor called ependymoma tested his bravery, strength and determination. In 1999, Robert Woodward became the first boy in history to sweep all Class 7 events in the Oregon state gymnastics championships. Soon after this triumph, the diminutive 9-year-old set his sights on a loftier goal: the U.S. Olympic team. He knew that he would have to log tens of thousands of hours in the gym, fine-tuning his muscles and building super-human stamina. He expected to twist, vault, stretch and somersault across the challenges and competitors in his way.
A whirlwind of wins
A new opponent
Technology and technique Robert underwent six-and-a-half weeks of radiation treatment at St. Jude. As usual, he practiced good time management, mastering a new skill between appointments. He had always wanted to learn to juggle; now he had the time to learn.

ELLIOTT, ROBERT WOODWARD BARNWELL (1840-1887). Robert Elliott, Episcopal bishop, the son of Stephen and Charlotte Bull (Barnwell) Elliott, was born at Beaufort, South Carolina, on August 16, 1840. After graduating from South Carolina College in 1861, he entered the Confederate Army and became aide to Gen. A. R. Lawton. Elliott was wounded at the second battle of Manassas and was with Joseph E. Johnston qv at the time of the general's surrender in May 1865. After the war Elliott entered a seminary to train for the Episcopal ministry and was ordained in 1868. He was rector at St. Philip's Church, Atlanta, Georgia, when he was elected by the House of Bishops to be the first missionary bishop of Western Texas; he was consecrated on November 15, 1874 and arrived in Texas the next month. He held his first service at Luling in a passenger coach of the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway. He found in his diocese six church buildings, three of which were unfinished and two without services; he left twenty-four churches, nine rectories, St. Mary's Hall qv in San Antonio, and Montgomery Institute in Seguin. Elliott married his third cousin, Caroline Elliott, on January 7, 1864, and they had five children. He had served as bishop for thirteen years when he died, on August 26, 1887, at Sewanee, Tennessee.

Bob Woodward and the "Bush at War" Hagiography
by ROBERT JENSEN B ob Woodward's latest travelogue through the minds of the powerful, "Bush at War," has been widely praised as a compelling account of the Bush administration post-9/11. As I faded in and out of consciousness while reading, I imagined the following, rendered in Woodwardesque prose: Robert Jensen walked into the conference room with his dogeared copy of "Bush at War" and laid it on the mahogany table next to the manila folder that held the talking points he had rushed to finish before the meeting. He knew the revisions, made right up to the last second, had been hard on his staff, but this was a meeting with the president, with all the principals. Everyone knew what was at stake. Jensen knew the president would expect him to have answers, not just questions, about the importance of the book by Bob Woodward, the Washington Post's star reporter. But, Jensen pondered, was Woodward really just a reporter? Or had circumstances changed the once scrappy guy from the metro desk who had broken the Watergate story wide open? Was Woodward something more? A first-draft historian? A meta-journalist? Jensen knew the president would want an assessment, and he knew that he would be on the spot.
