http://www.billstclair.com/LindaHamilton/woodward.html
I read, with my usual disgust, about the killing of Robert Woodward by the Brattleboro, Vt. police. His crime: seeking refuge and prayer in a Unitarian Church because he was thinking about taking his own life and was armed with a small knife only threatening to use it on himself. The only fact that surprised me was that the community was shocked that the police would kill him. Now mind you these are the people who are highly trained in disarming people, not to mention that they are armed with pepper spray and clubs. One would have to have been unconscious for the last decade to not know that the police are out of control and not made accountable for their actions. If you are someone who has heard about corrupt policeman, judges, district attorneys, lawyers and other government employees and did nothing to demand they be removed from their position then you are one of the causes that set up the scenerio that occurred in Brattleboro. The community must demand the firing of not only the officers involved but the Chief of police. The chief's comment that he was sure proper procedures were followed shows his obvious disregard for human life. The public must demand that the crime be investigated and charges filed. Contrary to what some would like us to believe which, of course, was reinforced when the citizens of this country let Bill and Hillary Clinton get away without being prosecuted, NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW. The proposal by the selectman that a citizen oversight committee be formed only shows their ignorance of how a republic works. They already have one. It is called a Grand Jury. By the way we don't live in a democracy. We live in a constitutional republic. That's why we say "... and to the Republic for which is stands." If one reads their history one would know that all democries lead to socialism which eventually leads to communism.

Bob Woodward
Welcome to the home page of Robert D. Woodward, Ellis and Nelle Levitt Distinguished Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication at Drake University
Why the Picture of All the Books?
Woodward is an old newspaper man. He loves newspapers, magazines and booksanything in print. He worked as a principal assistant national news editor and world editor at The Washington (D.C.) Star prior to coming to Drake in the fall of 1972. Look closely at the books, and you'll see he loves journalism, history, politics and the Internet, among other things. His stacks of magazines include Wired and Yahoo!Internet Life. And if you were to see other parts of his office, you would see newspapers stacked everywhere.
How Can Students Use the Internet?
The news-editorial sequence at Drake University was redesigned to form a news-Internet sequence. Here are five examples of student projects that Woodward has supervised. The Internet opens up exciting new possibilities for students to publish their work and to begin to understand the ways of cyberspace. Take a look at these five student-oriented sites on the Internet: InteractiveIowa was produced in the spring 2001 by a senior-level "Public Affairs Reporting" class, Journalism 171.

In 1971, he completed the synthesis of the complicated coenzyme vitamin B which is cyanocobalamin, by a sequence of more than 100 reactions in collaboration with Albert Eschenmoser of the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. This work involved a scale of concerted activity quite unprecedented in any previous synthetic effort in chemistry. The work on vitamin B

The Shooting of Robert Woodward by keith harmon snow
On December 2, 2001, thirty-seven year-old Robert A. Woodward entered the All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Brattleboro, VT. Parishioners of this peace-loving church waiting for the 10 a.m. service to begin instead heard from the weeping stranger, standing at the altar podium, who spoke about the environment and civil rights and his fears of being hunted down, tortured and killed by the FBI. ÒIf the police are called,Ó eyewitnesses recount Woodward saying, ÒI will be killed.Ó Children were immediately taken outside and at 10:04 a.m. church President Charles Butterfield placed a 911 call from his office. According to Butterfield he requested plainclothes officers be dispatched, he related that Woody was Òdeathly afraidÓ of authorities, that he had a knife and was threatening to take his own life. Using very specific language, the tearful Woodward begged the church for protection. A political activist awake to the FBI and CIAÕs histories of human rights atrocities and clandestine political repression, Woodward made a rational choice Ð in coming to this specific church based on the history of the Unitarian church in providing sanctuary for asylum seekers. (The Unitarian church is widely noted for its efforts to aid refugees from Guatemala and Nicaragua). Woodward begged for ÒsanctuaryÓ from the authorities. Eyewitnesses in later testimony conferred that Woodward claimed to have been threatened at his home the previous evening by CIA or FBI agents. A downstairs neighbor at WoodwardÕs apartment in Bellows Falls, VT, claims to have seen and heard two men questioning Woodward on the evening of December 1.
