Another fine mess
It began as a quiet plot to protect UK and US interests in Iran. Fifty years on, the fall-out of Operation Boot can still be felt through the Middle East. Robert Fisk, who knew the British classical scholar who helped mastermind it, reflects on a saga of unintended consequences and unlearnt lessons
02 September 2003 The Americans called their plot to restore the Shah Operation Ajax. The MI6 plan, dreamt up by Woodhouse, had the more prosaic title of Operation Boot. It was all a long way from Operation Iraqi Freedom, although there must be a few conservatives in the Pentagon now wishing that they'd dusted off their archives of the early Fifties to see how to topple Middle East leaders without an invasion. But then Operation Ajax/Boot - though it was undeniably about oil - was never intended to change the map of the Middle East, let alone bring "democracy" to Iran. Democracy, in the shape of the popular, effete Mossadeq, was the one thing Washington and London were not interested in cultivating. This was to be regime change on the cheap. Woodhouse was practised in the art of subversion. He had distinguished himself as an SOE leader with the Greek partisans during the Second World War, and his vigorous pursuit of his opposite number in the Wehrmacht, a certain Oberleutnant Kurt Waldheim, continued to the day of his death. My own investigations into Waldheim's activities as intelligence officer for the Wehrmacht's Army Group "E" in Bosnia had unearthed Waldheim's familiar "W" initial on the bottom of a report of the interrogation of one of Woodhouse's young officers - a man who was subsequently executed by the Nazis - and this brought Woodhouse and myself together. But the war had cast a dark shadow over Woodhouse, who to his death was haunted by the image of a young collaborator whom he had hanged in the mountains of Greece.

Below are the names that appear on the gravestone photographs for St George Colegate Parish Church, Norwich, Norfolk. If you would like to obtain a copy of any of the photographs shown as 'thumb-prints' on this page, please visit our ' how to order an image ' page. When there is a name without any dates, it is usually because that person is mentioned on the gravestone as the husband or wife of the deceased. If there are two names without dates, these are usually the parents of the deceased. This information is particularly useful for genealogy or family history research. Only pre 1900 legible monumental stones are included on this index page. The date of birth has in most cases been calculated from the age given at death. The age given on tombstone monuments is often incorrect and so dates of birth should be consided as probable rather than actual. This page is now fully indexed.

52. Robert Hamill - The Need For Justice
and the first time he saw it was after he had been in woodhouse Street with madehis way over to the person lying outside Eastwood s, that was robert Hamill.
http://justice.club24.co.uk/verdict.html
IN THE CROWN COURT OF NORTHERN IRELAND
THE QUEEN
v
PAUL RODNEY MARC HOBSON
Lord Justice McCOLLUM
The defendant is charged on two counts. The first is for the murder of Robert Hamill on 8 May 1997 and the second, added at the commencement of the trial by leave of the court, is for unlawfully fighting and causing an affray on 27 April 1997 in the County Court Division of Craigavon. The charges arise out of a violent incident which occurred in Portadown on 27 April 1997 which resulted in serious injuries being sustained by Robert Hamill. After lying unconscious in hospital for several days he died on 8 May 1997. Eve-witnesses to differing aspects of the event were called by the prosecution and their evidence reflects two different views of precisely what occurred. On the one hand, a group of people who had been patrons of St Patrick's Hall, Thomas Street, Portadown gave evidence of an unprovoked attack upon them at the junction of Thomas Street and Market Street as they returned towards their homes. The evidence of police witnesses suggests that some kind of confrontation took place before any serious injuries were sustained. To resolve the issues which I have to decide in this case. it is immaterial which version is correct but the incident has given rise to some public controversy and I feel that it is appropriate that I should analyse as best I can the evidence given and throw whatever light is possible upon the occurrence of the events which led to the tragic death of Robert Hamill. It must be recognized however that the differing accounts have not been tested against each other since they have both been presented in the same interest during the trial.

RUC Press Statements
The RUC has issued the text of all press releases following the attack on Robert Hamill in the early hours of April 27 in Portadown.
    Released on 27 April 1997
Two youths have been detained in hospital with head injuries following a clash between rival factions in Portadown around 1.45am this morning. Police moved in to separate the groups who encountered each other at the junction of Thomas Street and Market Street. Bottles were thrown during the hostilities and police themselves came under attack by a section of the crowd. Order was restored around 3am. Released on 27 April 1997
One of the youths injured is still detained in hospital. Police at Portadown are anxious to speak to anyone who was in the area of Market Street/Woodhouse Street and Thomas Street between 1am and 2am this morning and who witnessed the incident. Released on 30 April 1997
A police Land Rover crew in Portadown town centre were alerted to a disturbance and immediately intervened to gain order and prevent assaults. The numbers involved, however, were such that these officers were unable to contain the situation and became themselves the subject of attack. Police reinforcement arrived and calm was restored. Detectives are continuing their investigations into this very serious assault and disturbance and take this opportunity to make a further appeal for witnesses to contact them at Portadown RUC Station on 332424.

Introduction
The Fretwell/Woodhouse connection was the result of the marriage, at Barnby Dun on 11 May 1697 between James Fretwell (c1674-1743/4) and Mary (1675-1736), second daughter of John Woodhouse and Hannah (née Doughty). At this stage the research into the Woodhouse family has not progressed much beyond that obtained from a pedigree drawn up by a past recorder. This is provided below, together with a family tree. Both are preceded by a table of surnames of people who married into the Woodhouse family
Woodhouse Spouses
The table below lists those people who married into the Fretwell and Woodhouse families over the period covered by the Pedigrees. Askeron, J Askeron, T Boyne Doughty ... Wilcox
Woodhouse Family Trees
The generational family trees hopefully assist with distinguishing the numerous Johns, Marys, Richards, Hannahs, etc. As with most families of this period, the repetitive use of a limited number of first names, while showing due respect to forebears, proves a nightmare to genealogists.

Robert Fisk - 02 September 2003 http://news.independent.co.uk/world/fisk/story.jsp?story=439321 http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article4588.htm (Full Story) Not long before he died, old "Monty" Woodhouse asked himself if his role in the 1953 coup d'état in Iran had led, indirectly, to Ayatollah Khomeini's Islamic Republic. "Regime change" hadn't attracted President Truman, but when Eisenhower arrived at the White House in 1953, the overthrow of Mohammed Mossadeq's democratically elected government was concocted by the CIA with the help of Woodhouse, an urbane Greek scholar and ex-guerrilla fighter and Britain's top spy in Tehran. America was fearful that Mossadeq would hand his country over to the Soviets; Woodhouse was far more concerned to return Iran's newly nationalised oil fields to the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC). The restoration of the young Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi - our policeman in the Gulf - was the ultimate goal. It cost a couple of million dollars, a plane-load of weapons and 300 lives. And 26 years later, it all turned to dust. Article Length: 1574 words (approx.)
