Elizabeth Wolstenholme , the daughter of a Methodist minister from Eccles, was born in 1834. Elizabeth's brother Joseph received an expensive private education and eventually became professor of mathematics at Cambridge University . The Rev. Wolstenholme held traditional views on girls schooling and Elizabeth only received two years of formal education. After the death of both her parents, her guardians refused permission for Elizabeth to attend the newly opened, Bedford College for Women. Elizabeth decided to educate herself at home until she gained her inheritance at the age of nineteen. In 1853 Elizabeth purchased her own boarding school in Manchester Elizabeth believed that teaching was a highly skilled occupation that needed special training. In 1865 Elizabeth Wolstenholme joined with other women schoolteachers in her area to form the Manchester Schoolmistresses' Association. Two years later Elizabeth and

Gazetteer front page GENUKI Contents Transcription of The Lancashire Gazetteer , Joseph Aston, 1808 This transcription has been carried out as part of a larger project to produce a database of places in Lancashire and Yorkshire. The final product will be a Microsoft Access database with search facilities intended to overcome the difficulties of spelling variations. The aim is to locate each place with an Ordnance Survey grid reference, wherever possible, even if not shown on modern mapping. Aston's original Lancashire Gazetteer has unnumbered pages, and no attempt has been made during transcription to retain the original pagination of the Gazetteer. Likewise, fonts have not been slavishly copied beyond the use of capitalisation, italics and some font sizes. In a very few cases, the layout is slightly altered from the original. The information in the Appendix Addenda and Errata as given by Aston has been integrated into the main body of the text. In addition, the opportunity has been taken to correct what Aston calls 'accidental deviation from exact alphabetical arrangement.'

    Arnold, Daybrook and Red Hill
Arnold Parish extends from three to nearly six miles north of Nottingham, contains 4,704 inhabitants, and 4,670 acres of land, including 2,280 acres of Sherwood Forest. It was enclosed in 1789, when 700 acres were allotted to the impropriator, which was then sold to Thomas Holdsworth Esq., who is subject to the reparation of the church; and 23a 3r 37p were allotted to the Crown. Arnold is a large and populous village, half a mile east of Mansfield Road, and four miles north of Nottingham. It is pleasantly seated upon a sand rock, and has several neat mansions. The inhabitants are principally employed in framework knitting. Arnold Grove is a beautiful residence, occupied by William Williams Esq., solicitor. Daybrook is a considerable hamlet on the Mansfield Road, at the southern verge of the parish, three miles north of Nottingham. Near it is Cockcliff Farm , and a little to the south-east is Swinnows , where there is a brick-yard. Red Hill is a large village on the Mansfield Road, half a mile west of Arnold. To the north are several forest farms, within the limits of the parish, whence a road diverges to Oxton and Southwell.

Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
Some suggestions on the historical perspective might be:
    (a) Any wars etc.
    (b) Scientific breakthroughs of the time
    (c) Major discoveries of the time
    (d) How did this mathematician change history etc.

Basic information has been provided on this website. Additional information (e.g., monument inscriptions and burial information that may include exact birth and death dates, parents, spouse, etc.) may be available in some cases and can be obtained through out query process. A small fee will apply. Many cemetery indexes have been prepared as paper publications by the AFHS and are available for purchase.
