In 1645 Johan and his elder brother Cornelius visited France, Italy, Switzerland and England, then on his return Johan lived at The Hague as an advocate. He received a doctorate in law from University of Angers in 1645. De Witt was an associate of van Schooten and lived for a while in his house. His most important work Elementa curvarum linearum (1659-61) was written before 1650, and was the first systematic development of the analytic geometry of the straight line and conic . It was published by van Schooten as part of his edition of Descartes The word directrix is due to de Witt.

Aug. 20, 1672, The Hague Johan de Witt, detail of a painting by Jacobus de Baen, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam De Witt was a member of one of the old burgher-regent families of his native town of Dordrecht (Dort). His father, Jacob, was six times burgomaster and for many years sat for the town in the States of Holland. He was a strenuous adherent of the republican or oligarchical states-right party in opposition to the princes of the House of Orange, who represented the federal principle and had the support of the masses of the people. De Witt was educated at Leiden and early displayed remarkable talents, especially in mathematics and jurisprudence. His Elementa curvarum linearum (written before 1650, but published 1659-61) was one of the first textbooks in analytic geometry. (He later also applied his mathematical knowledge to the financial and budgetary problems of the republic.) We have our own home at the Voorstraat, build in 1628 in the old city center near the Big Cathedral (build on about 1090, the first written story dates from 1182. Dordrecht is situated on the left bank of the Maas (Meuse) River, at the point where a long arm of the North Sea cuts deeply into the Dutch coastline. In the Encyclopedia Britannica we can read : Dordrecht, also called DORT, OR DORDT, gemeente (commune), Zuid-Holland province, south-western Netherlands, at the divergence of the Merwede, Noord, Oude Maas (Old Meuse), and Dordtse Kil rivers. Founded in 1008, it was the residence of the counts of Holland until 1203 and was first chartered in 1220. It was fortified in 1271, and, although severely damaged by flood in 1421, it was one of the most prosperous medieval ports in the Netherlands until it was surpassed by Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Beducht voor machtige Oranjes Johan de Witt (1625 - 1672) Johan de Witt werd in 1625 in Dordrecht geboren als tweede zoon uit een oud regentengeslacht. De familie De Witt vormde een hecht gezin. De beide zonen, Cornelis en Johan, werden in 1641 naar Leiden gestuurd om rechten te studeren. Behalve in rechten was de jonge Johan ook zeer geïnteresseerd in wiskunde. Na drie jaar studie gingen de beide jonge heren met hun vader Jacob mee op een diplomatieke reis naar Denemarken en Zweden. Hierna maakten ze nog een twee jaar durende rondreis door Frankrijk en Engeland om hun opvoeding te voltooien. Terug in Nederland vestigde Johan de Witt zich als advocaat in Den Haag. In 1650 werd hij, 25 jaar oud op dat moment, benoemd tot pensionaris van de stad Dordrecht. Zo kwam hij terecht in de Staten van Holland, waar hij al snel opviel door zijn scherpe geest. Toen stadhouder Willem II in november 1650 plotseling stierf aan waterpokken was zijn erfzoon (de latere Willem III) nog niet geboren. In januari 1651 kwam in Den Haag de zogenoemde Grote Vergadering van regenten uit de gewesten bijeen die zich moest buigen over de vraag wie Willem II zou moeten opvolgen. Besloten werd geen opvolger aan te wijzen: het begin van het Eerste Stadhouderloze Tijdperk dat tot 1672 zou duren. De Staten van Holland benoemden in 1653 de jonge, slimme Johan de Witt als raadpensionaris. Hij trad aan in een periode waarin de Republiek de hoogtijdagen van haar macht en rijkdom beleefde. Op de Dam in Amsterdam verrees een nieuw Stadhuis, kunstenaars als Rembrandt en Vermeer schilderden hun nog altijd wereldberoemde doeken. De Republiek kreeg intussen ook in toenemende mate last van twee vijanden: Engeland en Frankrijk. Engeland zuchtte onder de dictatuur voor Oliver Cromwell en beleefde daarna allerlei intriges rondom (protestantse en katholieke) koningen. In Frankrijk begon omstreeks 1660 de imperialistische Lodewijk XIV (de 'Zonnekoning') zich te roeren. Johan de Witt probeerde met beide mogendheden op goede voet te blijven, wat het meest gunstig was voor de handel. Maar zo eenvoudig was dat niet.

Op 15-jarige leeftijd, toen hij al rechten studeerde aan de Utrechtse Hogeschool, verloor hij zijn vader. In 1653 promoveerde hij en werd advocaat. In die hoedanigheid werd hij opgemerkt door Johan de Witt , die menigmaal gebruik van zijn diensten maakte bij het opstellen van resoluties, officiële brieven en diplomatieke stukken. Op De Witts aanwijzing werd Caspar in 1663 pensionaris van Haarlem. Interessant in het leven van Caspar Fagel is zijn al of niet vermeende overgang van het staatsgezinde naar het oranjegezinde kamp. Tijdens het Eerste Stadhouderloze Tijdperk (1650-1672) nam hij waarschijnlijk het voornaamste initiatief tot het Eeuwig Edict, dat bepaalde dat de jonge prins Willem III wel kapitein-generaal (aanvoerder) van het Staatse leger mocht worden, maar geen stadhouder. Men heeft hierin veelal het bewijs gezien, dat Fagel aanvankelijk tegen Oranje was. Waarschijnlijk was het besluit een soort compromis en ging raadpensionaris Johan de Witt ermee akkoord om de eenheid te bewaren. Over de relatie tussen Johan de Witt en Caspar Fagel is veel geschreven. Hoewel de heren niet meteen elkaars gezworen vijanden waren, is er sprake van een lange reeks onenigheden. Vooral de positie van de jonge prins Willem en de relaties met het vijandige Frankrijk zorgden voor twistpunten. Waarschijnlijk steunde De Witt in 1670 Fagels kandidatuur als griffier in de Staten-Generaal uitsluitend omdat hij de Haarlemse pensionaris in de vergadering der Hollandse Staten maar een lastige dwarsligger vond.
