The Works of John Knox
The Works of John Knox - standard edition of Knox's text, collected and edited by David Laing. Six volumes, and approximately 3,700 pages. The Libronix Digital Library System (LDLS) edition of The Works of John Knox is presented as an interlinear resource. The primary manuscript line is that of Laing's edition of Knox' Works . The secondary line is a modernization of Laing's word (where needed). The modernization serves to make Laing's edition more readable by today's reader. As with other interlinear resources in Libronix, the primary and secondary lines in The Works of John Knox can be displayed, hidden, or reordered using the options in Each of these lines are also fields in the LDLS edition, which allows you to search only Laing's words, if desired. Conversely, if you want to search only the modernizations, that is possible as well. Note that for this resource provides field information and other resource-specific information that may be helpful.

(c. 1512 - 1572) For the first thirty or more years of his life very little is known about John Knox other than he was born in Haddington and educated at St Andrews University before becoming a priest. He was heavily influenced by George Wishart and started following him in 1546, although Wishart was burned for heresy in the same year. Wishart's persecutor, Cardinal Beaton , was also murdered in that year and Knox joined the murderer's in St Andrews Castle but was captured by the French and forced into service aboard their galleys. After he was released, in 1549, he travelled to Protestant England. He was always on the left wing of the Protestant party and he made a reputation for himself as a preacher at Newcastle, Berwick as well as London. Although he was offered the bishopric of Rochester he declined as he already knew that Edward VI's reign would be short lived and that a Catholic backlash was almost inevitable. He was to be proved correct and he escaped when Mary Tudor came to the throne, several bishops were not so lucky however.

CHAPTER X Page 1
THE SCOTTISH COVENANTERS AND THE REVOLUTION OF 1688
Progress of the Reformation in Scotland-George Wishart, John Knox, James Melville; the Solemn League and Covenant (1638); the restoration of Episcopacy (1661-4); popular discontent—the Pentland rising, Hugh M'Kail, Drumclog and Bothwell Bridge, Richard Cameron, Donald Cargill, Baillie of Jerviswood, Alexander Peden, James Ren- wick, the Wigtown Martyrs"; the Revolution of 1688; siege of Derry (1689). IN words of vehement hatred, Patrick Walker described prelacy as "That old strumpet mother and eldest beautiful daughter of Antichrist, with which the blinded nations have been and are sadly bewitched: but vile, vile, loathsome and hateful in the eyes of all zealous serious godly in Scotland, ever since the Lord made light to arise to see her abomina- tions." The passage expressed, with little exaggeration of language, the feelings of the majority of the Scottish people in the seventeenth century. The hatred of prelacy was not indeed shared by the aristocracy, nor had it extended to the north of Scotland. But in the Lowlands, and among the middle and lower classes, it was as bitter as the love of Presbyterian forms was deep and strong. Wishart, already inhibited from preaching, knew that he would not long remain unmolested. In December 1545, he had left Haddington, bidding Knox return to his pupils, and causing the two-handed sword which he carried to be taken from him. " One is sufficient for one sacrifice," he said. He spent the night at Ormiston with the laird and other friends. Supper ended, the company sang together Psalm li. in Wedderbum's version:

John Lauder - Scotland's Public Accuser of Heretics Some interesting notes on JOHN LAUDER - SCOTLAND'S PUBLIC ACCUSER OF HERETICS
(c1488 - c1552), by Gregory Lauder-Frost, F.S.A.,(Scot). In The Great Seal of Scotland , (number 1136 dated at Edinburgh on 15th February 1532) - "the King grants Letters of Legitimacy for John Lauder, bastard son of [Sir] Robert Lauder of Bass" [knight, who died before May 1545]. These Letters were subsequently confirmed by Pope Clement VII. John Lauder was a licentiate 'in Pedagogio' (the Science of Learning) at St.Andrew's University in 1508, and in a Decree Arbitral, dated at St.Andrews on 16th October 1518, he thus designates himself: "Ego sacris Apostolica et Imperiali auctoritatibus notarius, ac in officio Scriptori archivii Romane Curie matriculatus ac descriptus." He was subsequently ordained and became at different stages of his career Archdeacon of Tweeddale, and of Teviotdale. Later he famously became Scotland's Public Accuser of Heretics; he was at the same time Secretary to Cardinal David Beaton, and after him, Archbishop Hamilton.
