KNOX: AN OVERVIEW John Knox is the great Protestant reformer of Scotland who not only brought Scotland to Presbyterianism in the mid 1500s, but also left a legacy that was key to shaping not only Presbyterian ("Reformed") Protestantism but also representative democracy in the American middle colonies (from New Jersey to South Carolina) in the 1600s and 1700s. As with many Protestant reformers, Knox began as a Catholic priest, highly discontent with the moral and spiritual corruption that had overtaken the Mother Church. He was attracted to the Lutheran teachings of the early Scottish reformer, George Wishart; was appalled when in 1546 the Catholic cardinal had Wishart burned at the stake as a heretic; and then joined the group of rebels who moved to overthrow the hand of the Catholic church over Scotland. This put him in opposition to the pro-French party that ruled Scotlandand when French troops in 1547 crushed this Protestant rebellion in Scotland, Knox was led off to captivity as a French galley slave. His release was finally secured by the pro-Protestant English King Edward VI, leading Knox to come to England to be a Protestant pastor and then chaplain to the King. But when Edward died in 1553 and Catholic Mary Tudor ("Bloody Mary") came to the throne, Knox left England and made his way eventually to Geneva Switzerland where he joined a community of English expatriates living and studying under the direction of the great Genevan reformer, John Calvin. Knox took a great liking to both Calvin and his teachings and subsequently became a major voice in the English/Scottish reform movement not only in Geneva, but through letters, to a growing Protestant movement back in Scotland.

Queen of England How was it that Protestantism first came to Scotland?
  • Scotland's interest in Protestantism came at a time when the Scottish were very sensitive to their own national feelings. England had long been a problem for Scotland. But by the mid 1500s France was just as big a problem. Scotland had been under the rule of the Stuart family and now the rights of the throne belonged to Mary Stuart , a young woman engaged to marry Francis, the Dauphin or Prince of France. When she moved to France to be with Francis the Scottish felt a bit betrayed. She left the rule of Scotland to her rigidly Catholic mother, Mary of Guise, who would serve as regent until Mary Stuart came of age. The Guise family was well known for its hatred of Protestants. It was also well understood that when Mary Stuart finally did marry Francis, Scotland would be offered to him as a gift. Scotland would thus lose its position as an independent nation and become merely a province of France. The Scots did not like this idea at all. Rumors about Protestantism were swirling through Scotlandand the people seem sincerely interested. Even the noblemen were interested. George Wishart preached the Protestant vision to the Scotsbased on his own interest in the ideas of Martin Luther. In essence Wishart was a Lutheranand a very prominent voice in the affairs of the Scottish church.

ARCHDIOCESE OF GLASGOW
HISTORY ROBERT WISHART,
BISHOP OF GLASGOW 1271-1316 BACK TO INDEX REF H3
One of the most notable bishops of the diocese of Glasgow, and one time "Guardian of Scotland", Robert Wishart was active in the affairs of both Church and State during a crucial period in Scotland’s history. Wishart belonged to an old east-country family located Conveth in Mearns, an estate which then gave its name to the parish now called Laurencekirk. The surname (Guiscard, Wiscard, Wishart, meaning 'cunning' is Norman-French). He succeeded his uncle William Wishart, as bishop of Glasgow. He appears to have been elected in 1271,and consecrated at Aberdeen by the bishops of Aberdeen,Dunblane and Moray in January on 29 January 1273. Wishart seemed to experience some difficulties with his diocese, as letters from the pope in 1274 do not indicate that he was in his See. King Alexander III supported Wishart, who continued the building of the Cathedral, with the transept probably being completed in his episcopate. Arrangements also seem to have been made for the erection of a bell-tower or steeple and a treasury(probably the two western towers of the Cathedral. A charter granted at Partick in August 1277,by Maurice, lord of Luss, granted the bishop the necessary timber. The death of King Alexander III at Kinghorn in 1286, compelled the calling of a Parliament at Scone in April of that year. Its purpose was to set up a provisional government, to administer the country for its new Queen, Margaret, the Maid of Norway. Six 'custodes' or Guardians of the realm were appointed - two earls, Alexander Comyn of Buchan and Duncan of Fife; two bishops, William Fraser of St.Andrews and Robert Wishart of Glasgow; and two barons, John Comyn of Badenoch and James Stewart.

John Knox: The Years of Preparation
An Overview of Scottish Presbyterian History - Part Two
    L. Anthony Curto
Prior to leading the Scottish Reformation, Knox had to face a personal reformation. The death of George Wishart was a great blow to the Protestant cause in Scotland. The question as to who was going to carry the mantle in the place of Wishart laid heavy upon the minds of many in the realm. At this time, John Knox did not appear to be God's chosen vessel for this task. While Knox had served for a time as squire to Wishart, he had never indicated any desire to lead the Protestant movement in Scotland. Just prior to Wishart's capture in 1545, Wishart had persuaded Knox to "return to your bairns [pupils]...with God's blessing." Apparently, Knox did not seek martyrdom or fame. He left Wishart and returned to Lothian, where he took up the life of a tutor. But this was not the course which God had destined for the young Knox. As with Moses who retired to the wilderness before his call, so God would direct Knox to his task in due time. The Roman ecclesiastics, however, were not content to leave Knox alone. His name had been associated with Wishart when the latter had ministered in the Lothian area. Church authorities had captured, tried, and convicted other associates of Wishart for either heresy or for harboring a heretic.

Bill Venables provided an S-Plus function to generate random Wishart
variates in response to one of my previous questions. I will include the
function at the end of this message.
Suppose V is a covariance matrix on which you want an inverse Wishart
following parameters: degrees of freedom = d, covariance matrix = inverse
of (d*R). So, just generate V-inverse and invert to obtain samples from an
inverse Wishart distribution. In the code below, you would set "df" to d
and "SqrtSigma" to chol(solve(d*R)), the Cholesky decomposition of the
inverse of d*R, and invert the result.
Now, here is Bill Venables code, along with his commentary: "The following code should generate a single p x p Wishart matrix realisation with df degrees of freedom. If SqrtSigma is not

ANOTHER "PATENT MEDICINE ARTICLE" FROM THE PAGES OF ANTIQUE BOTTLE AND GLASS COLLECTOR MAGAZINE THE MAGAZINE OF THE ANTIQUE BOTTLE COLLECTING HOBBY antique bottles THE MEDICINE CHEST - BY DR. RICHARD CANNON old bottles I two names.
Dr. L.Q.C. Wishart at No. 10 South Second Street, Philadelphia, compounded Pine Tree Tar Cordial and introduced it to the public in 1859. He soon moved to larger facilities at No. 232 North Second Street. About 1861, he placed Dr. Wishart’s Great American Dyspepsia Pills on the market and in 1865, Dr. Wishart’s Worm Sugar Drops. The latter was advertised in 1875 in Harper’s Weekly. I am not aware of embossed bottles. Wishart’s son Henry R. inherited the Pine Tree Tar Cordial about 1870, and soon sold it to Philadelphia druggists Harry C. Campion and his son John W. John’s brother Franklin joined them, and the firm was called the Campion Brothers until 1897, when Franklin retired. J.W. Campion and Co. was still selling Pine Tree Tar Cordial into the nineteen hundreds. It was for "Consumption of the Lungs, Cough, Sore Throat and Breast, Bronchitis, Liver Complaint, Blind and Bleeding Piles, Asthma, Whooping Cough and Diphtheria, & c.".
A well known fact is that if children didn’t get colds and coughs so frequently, many more general pediatricians would be unemployed. Upper respiratory tract infections and their complications have been the "bread and butter" for Drs. Wishart, Wistar and Cannon all of these years.....
