The Early Years of John Knox
John Knox first publicly professed the Protestant faith about the end of 1545. His mind had in all probability been directed to that faith for some time before the change was avowed. The immediate instrument of his actual conversion was probably George Wishart, who, after a period of banishment, returned to his native country in 1544, to perish, within two years, at the stake, as the last and most illustrious of the victims of Cardinal Beaton. Among other places where he preached the Reformed doctrines Wishart had come to East Lothian in Dec., 1545, and there he made Knox's acquaintance.
While residing in the castle of St.Andrews, a stronghold and place of refuge for many Protestants, in July of 1574, the castle was seized by outside forces and John Knox became a French galley-slave for nineteen months. There he experienced hardships and miseries which are said to have permanently injured his health. On his release, which took place early in 1549, through the intervention, apparently, of the English government, Knox found that in the existing state of the country, he could be of little use in his beloved Scotland. For nearly ten years, he submitted to voluntary exile, like many of the worthiest of his countrymen in those troublous times. All these years, however, he devoted himself to ministerial labors in connection with the Reformed Church. His duty was provided for him in England, for the space of about five years as a minister of the English Church.

A LITTLE ABOUT THE WISHART FAMILY
My research into the Wishart families in Orkney has resulted in a large Wishart tree covering all the Orphir and Sandwick Wishart families. I have found nearly all the descendants from each child of Nicol Wishart and Helen Aitkine which makes this a very large tree. I also accumulated information on the Wisharts in South Ronaldsay, Orkney. If anyone with Orcadian Wishart blood in their family wishes to check that their Wishart background is included or they want to include further details please email me.
This Wishart family has spread worldwide with a large section in the USA.

A student of condemned reformers, a galley slave, an exile, John Knox denounced the queen of his nation and led Scotland to spiritual reformation.
A post card pictures a simple stone set in the ground of a square in Edinburgh, Scotland, commemorating the traditional spot of an uncertain grave. Inscribed on the stone is only "I.K. 1572" (for Ioannes [John] Knox). I found the post card between the pages of one of the well-used books in the library of Dr. Charles D. Brokenshire, a saintly scholar and revered teacher. On the opposite side of the card he had written to a nephew this message: "Scotland has erected no monument on the grave of John Knox, for Scotland is his monument. He was courageous and true. Dear nephew, may you be such a man." The truth of that message has been remembered profitably by one for whom it was never intended.
THE EVE OF THE REFORMATION
"Scotland is his monument." That noble testimony is understood best after viewing that kingdom on the eve of the sixteenth-century reformation. The country was weak; the soil was poor; commerce and learning were backward. There was border warfare regularly and full-scale war with England recurrently. Feudal disorganization and blood feuds made peace uncommon. The Roman Catholic church owned half of the country's wealth. That wealth was enjoyed by the higher clergy and by some favored nobles, while the lower clergy and the people paid the tithes. No country in Europe had greater religious corruption. The clergy were ignorant, incompetent, and uncouth. Parsons and monks were often hated by the laity. Superstition and ignorance were only slightly abated by the filtering northward of renaissance humanism and the Lollardy (followers of John Wyclif's teaching). The condition of the land has been described as "medieval semi-barbarism."

Occasionally, when both parents were away and the girls were younger, I had stayed in their home as a nominal minder. On mornings like these, instinct triumphs over common sense. I drove straight to the house. The demise of a political leader leaves little space for private grief. Already the TV had rolling news from London where the official statement of his death had not yet been issued. Jane and Catherine were watching in horrified, compulsive, fascination. Their mother would not be able to fly home until the essential formalities were completed. A more immediate problem was locating the eldest daughter, Sarah, on holiday in Californian wine country. Ten years ago mobile phones were not ubiquitous, there is a nine-hour time lag and the state has a lot of vineyards. In the event she was traced quite quickly and given the kind of news you never want to hear long-distance. Midway through the day, there was an eerie calm before the media storm. Close family friends Ken and Elizabeth Munro were on hand, offering their customary, unfussy, practical support. Helen Liddell arrived and said she would deal with the media interviews. There was no shortage of the latter, not least that afternoon when Elizabeth Smith finally braved the pavement press pack to be reunited with two of her girls. As they hugged and wept, the television behind them screened shots of her departure from London and arrival in Edinburgh. She had flown up with Meta Ramsay, now Baroness Ramsay of Cartvale, a senior foreign policy adviser in John Smith's office. Malcolm Rifkind, a passenger on the same flight, offered discreet condolences.

Record of the Wishart Family
By Anne Galloway
Submitted May 1997 [This information came from several sources. A typewritten copy of a mss. by Mr. B. Wishart of So. Minneapolis, MN, whose record ends in 1902; Crumrine's History of Washington Co. PA, 1884; The History of Bedford, Somerset and Fulton Counties, 1884; family records, and my own researches.] Dr. John Wishart and Dr. James Wishart who practiced in Washington Co PA in the early 1800s were sons of Dr. David Wishart of Perthshire in Scotland and Bedford Co. PA. It is possible that James Wishart, a charter member of Chartiers Presbyterian Church in Washington Co (1798) was their uncle. The two brothers were born in Scotland and came to the U.S. in 1796 with their parents and other brothers and sisters. They sailed from Greenock, Scotland, on 1 July 1796 and "after a tedious and dangerous voyage, being shipwrecked off Little Egg Harbor," they landed at New York on 8 September. Dr. David Wishart bought land on Yellow Creek in Bedford Co. and lived there for the rest of his life. He was born on 9 August 1752 in Kincardine, Perthshire, and died after 1830 in PA. His wife was Janet Belches (18 May 1762- d. after 1806), dau of James and Catherine Waterman Belches. David and Janet had thirteen children, two of whom died in infancy. Dr. John Wishart, their oldest son (24 March 1781-19 June 1864) was b. in Perthshire, grew up in Bedford co., worked on the family farm and studied medicine with his father. "In 1806 he entered the University of Philadelphia, and after a full course graduated in the spring of 1808. He married Mary, a daughter of Robert Tate, Esq., and removed to Washington, and opened an office October 3rd of that year, 'at the house of Mrs. Dodd, nearly opposite the courthouse,' now (1884) the site of Hasting's hardware store and the Washington Savings-Bank." Crumrine.

http://www.mslick.com/wishart.htm
THE CALVINIST CORNER George Wishart
Wishart was born in Scotland and died as a martyr, being 33 years old. He was a teacher of New Testament Greek at Montrose. He was exceptional in his eloquence and manner of communication.
Being the time of the reformation, he adopted the Reformed view of Scripture, denied the errors of the Catholic Church and was then charged with heresy. He went to England and then to the Continent where he was introduced to the Helvetic Confession and became the first one to translate it into English. He returned to England and spent some time teaching at Cambridge around 1542. Afterwards, he returned to Scotland. He fasted every fourth day, ate only twice a day, and lived in humble lodgings, even though his family was well connected and had sufficient means to support him. He was a sacrificial saint who ministered greatly to those suffering with the plague that swept through Scotland at that time. He married the daughter of John Knox.
The Catholic church was dominant in Scotland and his preaching against the papacy and the catholic doctrinal errors, aroused in the papists such a fury that he was threatened with death. Their tyranny was carried out with deadly aim. An attempt was even made on his life. When he was finally captured at Mirmiston, he was taken to St. Andrews, and burned at the stake.

http://www.wishart.org/georgewishart.html
George Wishart, 1513-1546 A famous member of the Pitarrow family was the martyr George Wishart, a powerful Protestant preacher, confidant and mentor of John Knox. While preaching the Protestant Reform in 1546 he was betrayed to Cardinal David Beaton and imprisoned in the bottle dungeon at the Castle in St. Andrews. Subsequently he was tried for heresy, condemned to death and burnt at the stake outside the Castle. Some weeks later George Wishart's friends conspired against the Cardinal and gained entry to the Castle by subterfuge. They found Cardinal Beaton in his room, killed him and hung his body from the battlements. It is said that afterwards they formed, in the Castle, the first congregation of the Church of Scotland. The spot where George Wishart died is marked by the letters GW in cobblestones outside the Castle, and commemorated by a plaque nearby (erected jointly by the St. Andrews Preservation Trust and the Wishart Society). He is also recorded on the Martyr's Monument at St. Andrews, and in a painting by John Drummond entitled "George Wishart on his way to Execution Administering the Sacrament for the First Time in Scotland after the Protestant Reform".The painting below is entitled "Wishart's Last Exaltation", by Sir William Quiller Orchardson (1832-1910). It is reproduced courtesy of the University of St. Andrews.

http://www.wishart.org/wisharttartan.html
What are Tartans? Tartans are historically associated with Highland clans. You can wear a Highland clan tartan if you are a member of the clan or of a related family, known as a sept. There is, however, limited historical evidence as to the authenticity of the so-called "ancient" tartans, most of which were adopted in the 18th and 19th centuries following the repeal of the Disarming Act of 1782. This Act had prohibited the wearing of Highland dress after the Jacobite uprising, when the wearing of the tartan was a symbol of Scotland's struggle for freedom. A book entitled "Vestiarium Scoticum", published in 1842, included illustrations of a number of Highland clan tartans which were subsequently adopted by most of the clans. Tartans worn by lowland families are of more modern design. Many of these date from the 20th century and form a miscellany of clan and family tartans, district (or specific) tartans, and trade designs, which are registered by the Scottish Tartans Society. They are sub-classified according to whether or not the tartan has been in use for 40 years or more. Why was there no Wishart Tartan?
