Valentine's Day
was a really wonderful time when I attended our little one-room school. Right after Groundhog Day, we started cutting paper doilies and red cardboard hearts to make decorations. I delighted in making fancy cards for Mum and Gram. As the day approached, my brother Cliff and I would sit at the kitchen table carefully addressing our Valentines. We would ponder over which card to choose to give to our friends. This was a big decision for two little kids. Finally it was Valentine's Day. We would pull our sleds behind us on our walk to school that morning. It was very difficult to concentrate on reading, writing and arithmetic - the hill by the school kept beckoning us to come and coast. At last, it was time to start the party! Jackets, snowpants, mittens and hats were hastily pulled on. No zippers or Velcro in those days! We would rush out the school door like a herd of cattle. And after climbing to the top of the nearby hill, we would jump on our ski-runner sleds and fly over the crusty snow. We did not feel the cold biting at our noses as we were having too much fun. Upon our return to the classroom, we would gather around the woodstove, drink hot cocoa and eat sandwiches and homemade cookies. Once we had eaten our full, we would open our Valentines and carefully read the messages from our classmates.

19. Miata Differential

Miata Differential/Axle Seal Replacement Tips
by John Wishart - john.wishart@compaq.com
Stuff needed:
  • Large flat blade screwdriver or pry bar (2 are helpful) 14 mm wrench 3/8" drive torque wrench is helpful Pipe handle extender or long breaker bar for applying more torque to break the nuts loose Hydraulic jack or lift Wheel lug wrench Tire jack Jack stands Hammer, soft face or use wood block for pad Liquid Wrench Oil drain pan Drift punch 2 differential - axle seals Gear oil, 90 weight (I used Valvoline synthetic 75W-90), 1 quart Paper towels or rags
Caution : This procedure was done on a '92 Miata with standard differential. I don't know if it applies to later/earlier models or limited slip diffs. Basically what we're doing here is removing the stub axles from the sides of the differential housing, removing and replacing the seals, then putting everything back together. Set the hand brake. Leave the transmission in neutral so you'll be able to rotate the driveshaft later. Jack up the car. The differential housing is a good place to do this, since there are two bosses on it for this purpose. Then support the rear of the vehicle on the jack stands. I put them under the boxes adjacent to the rear tie-down hooks just inside the rear bumper area. I couldn't get the vehicle high enough with my lift to use the side jacking points. Block the front wheels so the car can't go anywhere. Remove both rear wheels.
