John Wilson WILSON, JOHN, the same path with Campbell or Byron, or even the humble missionary, John Campbell, and these resolutions ended like dissolving views or day-dreams. It is curious that one of such a stirring spirit was at last contented with Britain, beyond the limits of which he never carried his peregrinations. Having succeeded at the age of twenty-one to a considerable fortune by the death of his father, he purchased, in 1808, the small but beautiful estate of Elleray, in Cumberland, embosomed amidst the picturesque lakes, with their distinguished poets for his neighbours and companions. terra firma, The air hath bubbles, as the water hath,
It was no bubble however; the bull was substantial, and may have taken no harm at all from being turned out occasionally for a midnight run of fifteen or twenty miles—no doubt to his own amazement, and his owner’s perplexity at the beast’s bedraggled condition next day." Thus far goes the account of one of Wilson’s early frolics; and certainly it was "very tragical mirth;" but thus to hunt a poor domestic bull that from its earliest calf-ship has been snubbed and cudgelled into submission, has almost as little of the romantic in it as the flight of a terrified dog with a pan tied to its tail, and the whole village school in close pursuit. If a man must needs taurize, let it be in the appointed lists, where

A Busy Shore / A Breezy Day
Stock code: S3199/S3200 A Pair of Oils on Canvas Both Signed and Dated 1870 12 x 20 inches SOLD Price catgeory: Biography Born in London, John James Wilson was the son and pupil of the well known marine artist, John (Jock) Wilson, RSA (1774 - 1855). Perhaps as a reaction to his father's tuition, John James Wilson's did not paint any marine subjects before 1849. However, in later life his attitude and interests changed and after 1849 he painted little else. John James Wilson exhibited at all of the major London Galleries. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1835 and at the British Institute in 1834. He also exhibited a large number of pictures at the Suffolk Street Galleries. He finally ceased showing his work in public two years prior to his death in 1873. Examples of John James Wilson's work can be seen at several major British Museums including; the Folkestone Art Gallery, the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield and the Wolverhampton Art Gallery.

Chap. I. 3. "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who by His great mercy hath regenerated us." For if God generated us of matter, He afterwards, by progress in life, regenerated us. "The Father of our Lord, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: "who, according to your faith, rises again in us; as, on the other hand, He dies in us, through the operation of our unbelief. For He said again, that the soul never returns a second time to the body in this life; and that which has become angelic does not become unrighteous or evil, so as not to have the opportunity of again sinning by the assumption of flesh; but that in the resurrection the soul returns to the body, and both are joined to one another according to their peculiar nature, adapting themselves, through the composition of each, by a kind of congruity like a building of stones.

Joseph, Proceedings of the British Academy, 1916 John Cook Wilson, Wykeham Professor of Logic at Oxford from 1899 to 1915, swung British philosphical opinion away from Idealism and towards Realism. Cook Wilson used careful attention to the grammatical form of languageincluding verbal stress and contextas the method of investigating the foundations of human knowledge. The result was a neo-Aristotelian notion of substances that are directly known to us in perceptual experience. He explained the difficulties of perceptual illusion by appealing to Locke's distinction between primary and secondary qualities. Although he published little in his lifetime, Cook Wilson's teaching had a huge influence on generations of Oxford students. His more famous pupils included Gilbert Ryle and J. L. Austin. Today, there are clear signs of a reawakening of interest in Cook Wilson, especially in the recent writings of John McDowell and Timothy Williamson. This interest centres around
