64. Bright Lights Film Journal | Jack Smith
Nan Goldin, Laurie Anderson, Robert wilson, and john Waters are among those who credit Jack Smith's singular vision with inspiring their own art.

flame still sears
BY GARY MORRIS Perhaps the most prodding of the pack was queer film artiste Jack Smith (1932-1989). The emphasis on film is misleading and limiting, however. Smith, who was raised in trailers in Ohio and Texas Flaming Creatures and Normal Love
Flaming Creatures Flaming Creatures
(1963) was not his first film; that distinction belongs to The Buzzards of Baghdad By all accounts, Smith was difficult but charismatic, a magical trickster manically involved in all kinds of projects at all times. Never far from poverty in spite of a few grants here and there, he was gifted in seducing actors and friends to work for free and in "appropriating" materials he needed for his art. For Creatures and the films that followed, he used cheap, sometimes discarded, color reversal stock to immortalize the drag queens , mermaids, vampires , naked poets, and other "creatures" who populate his films. The effect is of a dream that stubbornly resists consciousness, the imagery sometimes subtle and painterly, sometimes stark and high-contrast in rendering the filmmaker’s ecstasy-drenched demimondes. Smith was raised on Hollywood kitsch, and the imagery of 1940s movie monsters, and especially his patron saint Maria Montez — to whom he built an altar and prayed — inspired him. Always a good talker, he insisted on Montez’s importance as an actress to all who would listen (and there were many). He called her "the Holy One" and "the Miraculous One." After a screening of one of her films, he told a friend, "The Miraculous One was raging and flaming. Those are the standards for art."

Wilson, (John) Dover
(b. July 13, 1881, London, Eng.d. Jan. 15, 1969, Balerno, Midlothian, Scot.), British Shakespearean scholar and educator. Educated at the University of Cambridge, Wilson was professor of education at King's College, London (1924-35), and regius professor of English literature at the University of Edinburgh (1935-45). Besides serving as chief editor of the New Cambridge edition of William Shakespeare's plays (from 1921), he was a trustee of Shakespeare's birthplace and also of the National Library of Scotland. Wilson made important if controversial contributions to Shakespearean scholarship by a bold elucidation of textual obscurities and original, stimulating interpretations of the plays. His critical judgments have been variously labeled extreme, faulty, or inspired. His intensive study of Elizabethan handwriting proved helpful in reconstructing Shakespeare's text. His most famous book, What Happens in Hamlet (1959), is an original reading of that play, and The Fortunes of Falstaff (1943) presents a picture of Falstaff as a force of evil ultimately rejected by the king. His other works include

Developing a Student Project in Abstract Algebra: The Lights Out Problem
John Wilson
Centre College
wilson@centre.edu
Abstract of article : This article describes the development, solution, and results of a group project assigned during the second course of the abstract algebra sequence at Centre College. The Lights Out puzzle consists of 25 lights arranged in a square. When a light is touched, that light and each of the adjacent lights is toggled on or off. The students in this project were asked to develop a mathematical model for the puzzle and to determine how to turn off all of the lights starting with any given set of lights turned on. Several tips are given for faculty members who want to incorporate student projects into their courses. About the author : John Wilson thoroughly enjoys explaining mathematics to people of any age. He has tutored or taught mathematics every year since he was in the seventh grade. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of the South he earned his MS and Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina. He has taught at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky since 1985. He married his high school sweetheart and they have two children. He enjoys playing games and solving puzzles of all types but receives a special pleasure when they lead him to an interesting mathematical question.

80. Quarterly Review
Abstract Established in 1809 as a Tory rival to the Whig supporting Edinburgh Review, the idea for the journal came from Sir Walter Scott. The Quarterly Review stood politically for preserving the status quo. The journal was very hostile to the work of writers in favour of political reform. Writers such as Percy Bysshe Shelley, Leigh Hunt, William Hazlitt, Thomas Babington Macaulay and Charles Dickens all received hostile reviews in the journal, whereas the work of Jane Austin and Sir Walter Scott was warmly praised. It was alleged that john wilson Croker's savage review of john Keat's Endymion contributed to the poet's early death. The Quarterly Review ceased publication in 1967.
