John Wilson attended school in Kendal. From there he entered Peterhouse, Cambridge and he was the Senior Wrangler in 1761. This means that he was the best of all the First Class students to graduate after taking the Mathematical Tripos. Before he took his final examinations Wilson had already gained a strong reputation and he had also attracted considerable attention by defending Waring , who was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, from strong attacks which had been made on him as a result of his text Miscellanea analytica. In 1764 Wilson was elected a Fellow of Peterhouse and he taught mathematics at Cambridge with great skill, quickly gaining an outstanding reputation for himself. However, he was not to continue in the world of university teaching, for in 1766 he began a legal career. It was a highly successful career, too. He became a member of the Court of Common Pleas in 1786 which had been set up to make judgements in cases of civil disputes between individuals. At the time that Wilson served on this body it was one of three courts which dealt with common-law business. He is best known for Wilson's theorem which states that ... if p is prime then p is divisible by p This result was first published by Waring , without proof, and attributed to Wilson.

While he is doing this, Alexander dies, so Theopolytes defies the order of Ptolemy, founder of the Graeco Egyptian Pharaonic dynasty and decides to preserve the hoard in preparation for Alexander's second coming. The premise here being that as Alexander's ability to cause destruction, slaughter and conquest on a scale perceived by some to be miraculous, the man must have been immortal. So could Hitler if you believe that - not a pretty prospect. Fortunately, in Alexander's case, there is the hint that this is due to alien interference. The author has an accurate sense of period and place. How accurate, I am not qualified to judge. Inevitably it is difficult to put words into the mouths of characters who lived three centuries BC.

John Wilson ("Christopher North")
John Wilson was born in Paisley on 18 May 1785. His mother, Margaret Sym, was a descendant of James Graham, Marquis of Montrose; his father was a businessman who died in 1795, leaving Wilson a fortune. He was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he distinguished himself as a poet and athlete. His long blond hair, powerful physique and taste for exhibitionism all helped get him noticed. After graduating he bought the small estate of Elleray in Windermere (now a girls' school), where he was a friend of the Wordsworths and Thomas de Ouincey. In 1811 he married Jane Penny, the daughter of a Liverpool merchant, and in 1812 he published his first collection of poems. In 1814 financial problems forced him to move to Edinburgh where he qualified as an advocate, but never practised. Wilson joined the literary circle of the publisher William Blackwood (1776-1834), and became friendly with John Gibson Lockhart and James Hogg . In 1817 Blackwood launched the "Edinburgh Monthly Magazine" under the editorship of James Cleghorn and Thomas Pringle , but he sacked them after six issues, and Wilson and Lockhart stepped in to edit the journal under the new name "Blackwood's Magazine". It would become a Tory counterpart to the Whig-supporting "Edinburgh Review" edited by

"Unlike Turner , Constable entered the art world fairly late in life, and he made painfully slow progress once he was in it. Born at East Bergholt, Suffolk, the son of a prosperous corn merchant, John Constable spent several years in the family business before deciding, and obtaining permission, to study painting full-time. Before he went to the Royal Academy schools in 1799 (the same year that Turner, only very slightly older, was elected as an Associate) he had acquired some sort of grounding however: his spare time had been passed with the local plumber and artist, John Dunthorne; he had been introduced to the connoisseur Sir George Beaumont and had been shown his Claude 'Hagar and the Angel'; and he had made friends with two artists-cum-antiquarians, John Cranch and J.T. Smith, assisting the latter with his etchings of picturesque cottages and with his research on Gainsborough . Once in London, Constable studied Old Master landscapes in the collections of Beaumont, Beckford and the influential Academician Joseph Farington. Constable continued to study and copy the work of his predecessors for as long as he lived, constantly measuring their interpretations of the natural world against his own experience of it. In 1802 he exhibited at the Academy for the first time and also received an invitation to become a drawing master at a military establishment. This he rejected, having now set himself a more ambitious goal. Constable returned one day from Beaumont's collection 'with a deep conviction', he told Dunthorne, 'of the truth of Sir Joshua Reynolds's observation that "there is no

English composer, lutenist and singer. He was active in London at court and in the theatres from 1614. Employed as successor to Robert Johnson through 1623 as composer for the King's Men, probably taking over as principal song writer in 1617 after a period of collaboration. Wilson earned a place among the London waits in 1622, backed by Viscount Mandeville and the King's favorite Buckingham. He entered the King's Musick among the lutes in 1635; Oxford University granted him the D.Mus in 1644, and he was professor of music there from 1656 to 1661. He became a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal in 1662. Wilson as a composer of songs was quite robust; a 'hit or miss' composer given to quirkishness when not being downright popular. His playsongs display less versatility than those of Robert Johnson. He could write a good straightforward tune, indeed, he had the common touch, and some of his songs may be mistaken for genuine ballads. In more sophisticated vein he could handle the decalamatory style effectively, but he lacked Johnson's ability to explore deeper levels of character and feeling.

[ Home ] History Threat of Quarry The Underground Railroad Follow Me... THE JOHN WILSON HOUSE EARLHAM, IOWA Built in 1861 this remarkable and unique historical landsite is under immediate threat by a limestone quarry which seeks the mineral rights to the adjoining land. A limestone quarry located only 1/4 of a mile from the homestead has been in operation since the 1970s, undergoing blasting two times or more daily. Records show that blasts damaged the Grout House and watchtower associated with the underground railroad and other historical buildings in the surrounding area, which have since been torn down. Neighbors have lost their source to artesian well water (which is believed to have been caused by the quarry mining), and now with the quarry seeking the limestone in the adjoining land, may also destroy the only remaining natural artesian well and historic homestead associated with the underground railroad in Dallas County.
