Edwin Hubble Discovers the Universe

Mt. Wilson Archive Carnegie Institution of Washington Explanation: No person in history has had greater impact in determining the extent of our universe than Edwin Hubble . From proving that other galaxies existed to proving that galaxies move apart from one another , Hubble's work defined our place in the cosmos. Hubble lived from 1889 to 1953 and is shown above posing with the 48-inch telescope on Palomar Mountain and his famous pipe. In memory of his great work, the Orbiting Space Telescope was named after him . The rate of the universe's expansion is now parameterized by a quantity known as Hubble's constant . A modern debate on the value of Hubble's constant took place in 1996. Tomorrow's picture: A Doomed Dust Disk Archive Index Search ... USRA

ROY WOOD SELLARS: PHILOSOPHER OF RELIGIOUS HUMANISM
by W. Preston Warren of Bucknell University
Roy grew up quite happily in very rural Pinnebog with much outdoor life: skating, swimming, playing baseball and tending the garden. There were Norwegian, Anglo-Canadian and French Canadian boys. ''It was a rather egalitarian situation...religious differences were taken for granted and ignored." A two-culture background disposed him to be international in outlook.
Although he had friends in the village and countryside, he had no intellectual competitors. He went to the village school; and on completion of the eight grades at Pinnebog, he was sent to the Ferris Institute at Big Rapids to prepare him for the university. "There, he said, "I began to stand out and gained the friendship of both Mr. and Mrs. Ferris.'' W. D. Henderson, his teacher in physics and chemistry, once visited Sellars's home and saw his father's library. "Now I know," he said, "why Sellars has stood out."

Renegade CIA Agent,

A one-time operative for U.S. navy intelligence, Edwin Wilson went on to spend sixteen years working for the CIA . As a so-called expert on the Middle East, Wilson , by the early 1970s, began to collect data that would serve his own interest. In 1971, he met and befriended one of the brains trust members of the CIA , the brilliant Waldo "Doobie" Dubberstein , a CIA analyst who was entrusted with America's top secrets, ranging from the design of nuclear missiles to the Pentagon's contingency atomic war plans. Wilson , who had planned to leave the CIA and establish a private intelligence agency of his own, cultivated Dubberstein , who, in addition to his top intelligence position with the CIA and the Pentagon , was one of the world's leading archeologists and biblical scholars. In 1978, the hulking Wilson met with Dubberstein , telling him that he was on a hush-hush mission concerning Libya, or so Dubberstein later claimed.

About the Author
Edwin Henry Wilson, a popular Unitarian minister, was one of the founders and preeminent leaders of the modern humanist movement. He was an editor and signer of the original humanist manifesto, the first editor of The Humanist magazine, an organizer of the International Humanist and Ethical Union, and the founder of the Fellowship of Religious Humanists. More about the author
About the book
The First Half-Century of Humanism To tell the story of the document that crystallized the principles and ideals of contemporary humanism is to tell the story of the origins of the humanist movement itself. Conceived from a convergence of freethought and religious liberalism at the end of the nineteenth century, born out of the global upheaval of World War I, nourished by the cultural revolutions of the 1920s, modern humanism came of age in 1933 with the publication of "A Humanist Manifesto." This statement of fifteen affirmations on cosmology, biological and cultural evolution, human nature, epistemology, ethics, religion, self-fulfillment, and the quest for freedom and social justice explicitly delineated the leading ideas and aspirations of its era. Changing times, however, brought new challenges—the rise of fascism, World War II, the spread of communism, the Cold War—with consequent calls to revise or replace the manifesto. These appeals, too, make up part of the early history of the humanist philosophy and the people who fostered its development.
