Significant Scots
Alexander Wilson Ornithology, though it has swallowed up all the little I had saved, has procured me the honour of many friends, eminent in this country, and the esteem of the public at large; for which I have to thank the goodness of a kind father, whose attention to my education in early life, as well as the books then put into my hands, first gave my mind a bias towards relishing the paths of literature, and the charms and magnificence of nature. These, it is true, particularly the latter, have made me a wanderer in life; but they have also enabled me to support an honest and respectable situation in the world, and have been the sources of almost all my enjoyments." as he manifested an increasing aversion to his occupation; or, as more worldly-minded people would term it, a tendency to idleness. Nor did the circumstance of several of his juvenile pieces appearing about this time in the Glasgow Advertiser

Alexander Wilson
"I dare say you will smile at my presumption when I tell you that I have seriously begun to make a collection of drawings of the birds to be found in Pennsylvania, or that occasionally pass through it: twenty-eight, as a beginning, I send for your opinion."
Alexander Wilson, in a letter to William Bartram, naturalist, July, 1805 "Enlightened men living in a democracy readily discover that nothing can confine them, hold them, or force them to be content with their present lot."
"As soon as the crowd begins to take an interest in the labors of the mind it finds out that to excel in some of them is a powerful aid to the acquisition of fame, power or wealth. Restless ambition born of equality turn to this as to all other directions. The number of those studying science, literature, and the arts becomes immense. There is vast activity in the realms of the mind; every one tries to blaze a trail for himself and attract public attention."
"It was a misfortune that he wrote so much verse, for the greater part of it is drearily prosaic and the few pieces that are really good are like modest little poppies that have caught the bright colors of the sunlight and the freshness of the dewdrop, but are overlooked in the great field of dry stubble." (J.S. Wilson, p. 130)

Alexander Wilson American Ornithology
CAROLINA PARROT.PSITTACUS CAROLINENSIS. FIG. 120
Of one hundred and sixty-eight kinds of Parrots enumerated by European writers as inhabiting the various regions of the globe, this is the only species found native within the territory of the United States....The species now under consideration is also known to inhabit the interior of Louisiana, and the shores of the Mississippi and Ohio, and their tributary waters, even beyond the Illinois River, to the neighborhood of Lake Michigan, in lat. 42 deg. north; and, contrary to the generally received opinion, is chiefly resident in all these places. Eastward, however, of the great range of the Alleghany, it is seldom seen farther north than the state of Maryland, though straggling parties have been occasionally observed among the valleys of the Juniata; and according to some, even twenty-five iles to the north-west of Albany, in the state of New York. *Mr. Audubon's information on their manner of breeding is as follows: "Their nest, or the place in which they deposit their eggs, is simply the bottom of such cavities in trees as those to which tbey usually retire at night. Many females deposit their eggs together. I am of opinion that the number of eggs which each individual lays is two, although I have not been able absolutely to assure myself of this. They are nearly, round, of a rich greenish white. The young are at first covered with soft down, such as is seen on young Owls."

Alexander Wilson was born at Paisley, Scotland in 1766. He was the son of a poor distiller. His mother died when he was ten. Wilson left school when he was twelve or thirteen years old to live with his older sister and her husband, William Duncan, who was a weaver. While living with them he learned how to weave. As a young man he tried his hand at writing and engaged in politics. During a political feud between the weavers and the capitalists of Paisley, Wilson wrote a scathing satire about one of the prominent capitalists and his unfair treatment to weavers. This resulted with Wilson being sentenced to a short prison term and ordered to burn the document in front of the townsmen.

CHICAGO Wrigley Building 410 N. Michigan Ave. Chicago, Illinois 60611 CHARLESTON The Audubon Gallery 177 King Street. Charleston, South Carolina 29401 THE N ATURAL H ISTORY A RT G ALLERY Alexander Wilson A merican Ornithology IMAGE GALLERY PRICE LIST Alexander Wilson, born ten years before the American Revolution in Paisley, Scotland, had been a weaver of silk and a widely published poet who ultimately found himself jailed for libel and publicly disgraced. Frustrated and penniless, in 1794 he emigrated to the United States and established himself in Philadelphia. Inspired by the vast unsettled frontier, Wilson's interests turned to the scientific study of birds. The first comprehensive work published on the subject, his American Ornithology added 39 new species to those previously known and earned him the title Father of American Ornithology. Far more accurate and painterly than anyone who preceded him, his engravings and descriptions were well recognized in his lifetime. Thomas Jefferson, an early subscriber, was among his supporters. Wilson never recovered from his last exhausting river crossing in pursuit of an elusive specimen. He died at age 47, one volume short of completing American Ornithology. Comprised of seventy-six hand-colored engravings, American Ornithology depicts 262 species of birds. We offer a complete selection of Wilson's work. All plates are in excellent condition. These museum-quality hand-colored engravings remain very affordable. In fact, we feel that Wilson's work is undervalued and represents an excellent opportunity for the collector of early-American natural history art.
