Alexander Wilson (Glasgow)
This founder is treated to an excellent exposition by Philip Gaskell in his book on the eighteenth-century printers to Glasgow University. He the subject of some discussion by Johnson and Berry in their book on types. Wilson's first known specimen sheet was issued in 1772 however, William Rind seems to be using these types as early as February, 1770 in his Virginia Gazette. Wilson types are also found in the work of other printers prior to the release of the first specimen indicating a strong word-of-mouth promotion of the fonts among printers and/or agents supplying printers. (This particular subject deserves more study and will be treated to such by the project in the future.) The foundry was first established at St. Andrew's in 1742 in a partnership with John Baine. In 1744 the whole operation was moved to Glasgow and Wilson began work with the Glasgow University Printers, Robert and Andrew Foulis. Specifics:

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Alexander Wilson July 6 August 23 ) was a Scottish -born American poet ornithologist naturalist and illustrator Wilson was born in Paisley, Scotland , the son of an illiterate distiller. In 1779 he was apprenticed as a weaver. His main interest at this time was in writing poetry , and his poems commenting on the unfair treatment of the weavers by their employers got him into trouble with the authorities. The "golden age of Renfrewshire song" is embodied in the persons of Wilson and Robert Tannahill Wilson was seven years younger than Robert Burns and eight years older than Tannahill. He was born near the Hammils, a broad if not steep waterfall in Paisley where the river Cart skirts Seedhill. It does indeed appear to be the case, as William Motherwell states, that a great amount of literary activity began in Paisley around this time. In May 1794 Wilson left Scotland with his nephew to find a better life in America. Wilson obtained employment as a schoolteacher in Milestown, near Philadelphia . In 1801 he left Milestown and found a new teaching post in Gray's Ferry

American Ornithology published in 1808-1814, illustrated 268 species, including descriptions of 26 new species. He also conducted the first breeding bird census, in Bartram's garden, corrected earlier errors of taxonomy, and published many observations of natural history. His 1810 meeting with Audubon probably inspired Audubon to pubish his own book on birds, and he also influenced many later artists and ornithologists. He died in 1813. His main interest at this time was in writing poetry, and his poems commenting on the unfair treatment of the weavers by their employers got him into trouble with the authorities. In May 1794 Wilson left Scotland with his nephew to find a better life in America. Wilson obtained employment as a schoolteacher in Milestown, near Philadelphia Pennsylvania . It was here that he met the famous naturalist William Bartram ornithology . In 1802 Wilson decided to publish a book illustrating all the North American birds. With this in mind he travelled widely, watching and painting birds and collecting subscribers for his book. The result was the nine-volume American Ornithology (1808-1814), illustrating 268 species of birds, 26 of which had not previously been described. He died during the writing of the ninth volume, which was completed and published after his death by his friend George Ord Wilson is now regarded as the greatest American ornithologist prior to Audubon . It was his meeting with Audubon in Louisville in 1810 which probably inspired the younger man to produce a book of his own bird illustrations.

ALEXANDER WILSON (1766-1813)
American Ornithology; or, the Natural History of the Birds of the United States . Philadelphia: Bradford and Inskeep, 1808-1814. 9 volumes. Naturalist William Bartram, Alexander Wilson's neighbor on the Schuylkill River just below Philadelphia, encouraged Wilson to collect specimens of birds and learn to draw and paint them. Wilson, an ornithologist, produced this comprehensive work, covering the eastern United States north of Florida, based almost entirely on his own observations. The plates were produced by engravings from his own drawings; Wilson colored a sample proof for use as a model by hand-colorists. American Ornithology is a landmark in American natural history. Gift of Joseph Y. Jeanes, Jr.

Alexander Wilson
Alexander Wilson was born on July 6, 1766, the son of a weaver. He was a Scottish immigrant, intense and poetic, taught school at Kingsessing, Pennsylvania. Inevitably, Wilson and the very different Bartram met on common ground the Botanic Garden . There he came under the gentle tutelage of the elder Bartram. Wilson's enthusiasm was high, but a lack of ornithological knowledge and training combined with meager artistic abilities left him unformed and undirected until he became John Bartram's "student." Under the patriarch's guidance, Wilson learned to draw, to describe and identify difficult birds, and to understand the scientific literature in the Bartram library. With John Bartram's encouragement, Wilson conceived his grand design to write his American Ornithology Alexander Wilson's journeys in search of birds were many and long, and he traveled well beyond the borders of Pennsylvania. But his base was in Philadelphia: the riches in nearby bird life and the hospitality and resources offered by Bartram and America's then prime metropolis made this area a fruitful source of many of Wilson's bird accounts. Wilson's nine-volume
