Click here for a printer-friendly version of the complete text As an example of independent lay initiatives in Britain, I start with the Tablet , obviously, because that’s the paper I edit and with which I am familiar from experience. It was founded by a layman, Frederick Lucas, back in 1840. Like me, he became a Catholic after learning his Christianity elsewhere – in his case as a Quaker. His style was rumbustuous. For a while he edited the paper from Dublin, where it was denounced by the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Lord Clarendon, as “one of the most offensive and virulent newspapers in Europe”. He didn’t get on with Bishop (later Cardinal) Wiseman, then responsible for south east England, who wrote to the Cardinal Secretary of State in the Vatican expressing regret at the paper’s “personal attacks, foul language, gross abuse, and constant interference in ecclesiastical affairs.” But Frederick Lucas was a big man in every way, and he launched the paper fair and square on the path of independence it maintains today. In 1868, however, the paper passed into clerical ownership when it was bought by Father (later Cardinal) Herbert Vaughan, and it stayed in clerical ownership for sixty-eight years, until 1936. Vaughan was a great supporter of Pius IX at the time of the debate over infallibility before the first Vatican Council. He was concerned to prevent any discussion of the matter in the pages of the

Naturalist and conservation leader John Muir's life and dedication to the preservation movement are discussed in a new book published by the University of Oklahoma Press. John Muir: Apostle of Nature, by Thurman Wilkins, is Volume 8 in The Oklahoma Western Biographies. Nearly a century after John Muir's death, his works remain in print, his name is familiar, and his thought is much with us. How Muir's life made him a leader and brought him insights destined to resonate for decades is the central question underlying this biography by Thurman Wilkins. Born in Scotland, Muir came from a stern background of religious fundamentalism. Life grew sterner yet when the family immigrated to the United States and undertook the backbreaking task of developing a farm in Wisconsin, but Muir's fertile mind enabled him to escape farm drudgery by means of bizarre inventions. Armed with a university introduction to geology and botany, he became a consummate walker, tramping the Canadian forests, the southeastern woodlands, the Sierra Nevada, and several Alaskan glaciers until he had learned about wilderness at nature's own knee. Profoundly attached to dramatic wild places and plants, and to the Sierra and the redwoods in particular, Muir spearheaded efforts to protect forest areas and have some designated as national parks. Muir's wilderness ethic, as revealed in his books, letters, and journals, rests on his conception of the proper relationship between human culture and wild nature as one of humility and respect for all life.

    John Wilkins in Australia
    Summary:
John Wilkins, editor of the influential Catholic weekly The Tablet , has been in Australia attending a conference on the 40th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council. He speaks about the role of the religious media, and the Church in the modern world.
Details or Transcript: Stephen Crittenden: The influential international Catholic weekly The Tablet was founded in London in 1840. In Britain it’s widely read by Anglicans and Catholics who value The Tablet because it has a focus not just on internal church affairs, but on the wider world of politics and conflict and social change. The Tablet’s also showing an increasing interest in what’s happening here in Australia, and the paper’s editor, John Wilkins, has just been in Australia attending a conference marking the 40th anniversary of the beginning of the Second Vatican Council. I asked him how well he thinks religious issues are covered by the mainstream media, and whether the media has lost interest in religion at precisely the wrong moment in history. John Wilkins: Stephen Crittenden: What about the secularism of journalism itself as a discipline? I mean, when you think of people like Tom Paine at the beginning of journalism, you immediately think of journalism as in some ways a product of the secular enlightenment. Can it make a valuable contribution, looking in from outside?

In devising a general system for the classification of archival entities, we should be mindful of the intellectual tradition of this work, which extends at least to the seventeenth century. Some of the most ambitious efforts were also among the earliest; not all have been entirely successful. An important essay by Jorge Luis Borges asks why this might be so, and may be taken to suggest moderation in the multiplication of classes, differences and species. [N.B. An English translation is below the Spanish original.]

An Essay Toward a Real Character and a Philosophical Language
    by Bishop John Wilkins
This web site contains the full text and original page images of a remarkable book written by Bishop John Wilkins in the 1600's. It contains a large ontology, a written and spoken language derived from the ontology, and a dictionary that maps terms in the ontology to English. Examples that relate hundreds of other human languages to the ontology are included. While many areas of the ontology are only of historical interest, there are numerous insights into issues of ontology and knowledge representation that should be of interest to the modern reader. The scope and scholarship of the work are impressive. The HTML version of the book has not been checked for errors of transcription and we would welcome corrections See side-by-side Images and HTML from the book. (Currently only available for browsers other than IE). This book may have application as a completeness check on more modern ontologies
