The Hungarian version of Eugene Paul Wigner From the time he was five years old Wigner was given private tuition at home. When he was ten years old he entered an elementary school but about a year after he began his studies at the school he was told that he had tuberculosis. The cure was to be found in sending him to a sanatorium in Breitenstein in Austria and he spent six weeks there before being told that the diagnosis had been wrong and that he had never had tuberculosis. However, one advantage of his six weeks was that he began to think about mathematical problems [13]:- I had to lie on a deck chair for days on end, and I worked terribly hard on constructing a triangle if the three altitudes are given. In 1915 Wigner entered the Lutheran High School in Budapest. Here he met John von Neumann who was in the class below him. However he wrote [8]:-

Eugene Wigner, was born in Budapest, Hungary, on November 17, 1902. He obtained his Ph. D. in chemical engineering from the Technische Hochschule Berlin. In 1928, he began sharing a position at Princeton University with his friend and collegue, John von Neumann With the discovery of fission, Wigner began working with Enrico Fermi on the problem of determining whether a fission-induced chain reaction was possible. He worked with Fermi at the Metallurgical Laboratory, from 1942 to 1945. By the time Fermi's reactor actually went critical, Wigner and his team had completed the task of almost unbelievable proportions, the design of the full-scale Hanford production reactors. He then continued to assist in their construction. In 1946 - 1947 became Director of Research and Development at Oakridge. Official recognition of his work in nuclear research includes the Enrico Fermi Award in 1958 and the Atoms for Peace Award, in 1960. He shared the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physics with U.S. physicist Maria Goeppert-Mayer and German physicist J. H. D. Jensen for work on the structure of the atomic nucleus.

Eugene Paul Wigner
Eugene Paul Wigner
Hungarian-born American physicist, joint winner, with J. Hans D. Jensen of West Germany and Maria Goeppert Mayer of the United States, of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1963. He received the prize for his many contributions to nuclear physics, which include his formulation of the law of conservation of parity.
Wigner studied chemical engineering and received his Ph.D. from the Institute of Technology in Berlin in 1925. After serving as a lecturer there and at the University of Gottingen, he went to the United States. Apart from two years (1936-38) as professor of physics at the University of Wisconsin, he spent his academic life at Princeton University, serving as a professor of mathematical physics from 1938 until his retirement in 1971. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1937. At Gottingen, Wigner formulated his law of the conservation of parity, which implies that it is impossible to distinguish left from right in fundamental physical interactions. This theory became an integral part of quantum mechanics, but in 1956 the physicists Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen Ning Yang showed that parity is not always conserved in weak interactions of subatomic particles. At Princeton, Wigner determined that the nuclear force that binds neutrons and protons together is necessarily short-range and independent of any electric charge. He also developed the principles involved in applying mathematical group theory to investigate the energy levels of atomic nuclei. In 1936 he worked out the theory of neutron absorption, which later proved useful in building nuclear reactors.

Born: 17 Nov 1902 in Budapest, Hungary
Died: 1 Jan 1995 in Princeton, New Jersey, USA
Wigner 's Hungarian version of Eugene Paul was Jenõ Pál. He was a friend of John von Neumann and they were in the same class. His first degree was in chemical engineering fron Berlin. His work then turned to applying group theory to quantum mechanics and he was working on this during (1928-30) when he lectured in Berlin. From 1930 to 1933 Wigner spent part of the year at Princeton, part at Berlin. His Berlin post vanished under the Nazi rules passed in 1933 and from then, except for the years 1936 - 1938 in Wisconsin, Wigner spent the rest of his career at Princeton. He was appointed to the chair of mathematical physics at Princeton in 1938. Wigner's most important work was on quantum mechanics, in particular the concept of the symmetry in space and time that characterises subatomic particles. This work involved him in a deep study of group representations. In 1938 he constructed a class of irreducible unitary representations of the Lorentz group. He was awarded a share of the Nobel prize for Physics in 1963.
