Jakob Nielsen papirer
Overordnet beskrivelse af samlingen
Kort beskrivelse:
Klausuler:
Ingen.

Jakob Nielsen papers
General, short description of the collection
A short description:
This collection of Jakob Nielsen papers consists mainly of reprints, which Nielsen has received from other scientists and sorted by authors. In addition to the reprints there is other material from some of the persons, i.e. letters, manuscripts, applications for positions etc. All the material is from the period around 1890-1959 and the reprints are in many different languages. However, the additional material is mainly in Danish or German.
Size:
The collection is contained in 79 archival boxes of which the first 25 are standard boxes while the rest are Nielsen's original boxes.
Handed over:
The collection was located in the basement of the mathematical library in the E block of the H. C. Ørsted Institute in the fall of 1996. It is not known when and how it was put here. Photocopies of material from the Staatsarchiv Hamburg was added to box 10 in July 1999.

Lost in a Forest
by Steven R. Finch and John E. Wetzel

j-wetzel@uiuc.edu
Fifty years ago, Richard Bellman posed an interesting search problem that can be phrased as follows: A hiker is lost in a forest whose shape and dimensions (but not its orientation) are precisely known to him. What is the best path for him to follow to escape from the forest? Construing “best” as meaning “shortest,” we survey what is known for regions of various shapes, we clarify the relationship with Leo Moser's well-known “worm” problem, and we consider some related questions. Potter, Wielandt, and Drazin on the Matrix Equation AB : New Answers to Old Questions
by Olga Holtz, Volker Mehrmann, and Hans Schneider
holtz@math.Berkeley.edu
hans@math.wisc.edu mehrmann@math.TU-Berlin.de
In this partly historical and partly research-oriented note, as part of our continuing examination of the unpublished mathematical diaries of Helmut Wielandt we display a page dated 1951. There he gives a new proof of a theorem due to H. S. A. Potter on the matrix equation AB BA , which is related to the q -binomial theorem, and asks some further questions, which we mostly answer. We also describe results by M. P. Drazin and others on this equation.

Sommersemester 2003 Deutsche Mathematik Nationalsozialismus und Mathematik Die DMV in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus Was ist die DMV? Der Annalenstreit - DMV gegen Ende der Weimarer Republik ... Quellen 1.

Remembering Olga Taussky Todd
Written by Chandler Davis, University of Toronto
Reprinted from the AWM Newsletter, January-February, 1996, Volume 26, #1, with permission of the author and the Association of Women in Mathematics. The field she is most identified with which might be called "linear algebra and applications" through "real and complex matrix theory" would be preferred by some did not exist in the 1930's, despite the textbook by C.C. MacDuffee. Her stature in that field is the very highest, as was palpable in the standing ovation after her survey talk at the second Raleigh conference in 1982. In tracing her professional development, I will say a little about how the field came together. Like other Jews in Germany and Austria, Olga Taussky would have had to leave by about 1938. Some delayed as long as they could; some, too long. She left in 1934. She moved, after a year at Bryn Mawr, to Girton College Cambridge, and remained in England until after World War II. It is amusing to hear the story of her job interview, where a member of the committee asked her, with motivation we can imagine, "I see you have written several joint papers. Were you the senior or the junior author?" Another member of the committee was G.H. Hardy, who interjected, "That is a most improper question. Do not answer it!" At another interview she was asked, "I see you have collaborated with some men, but with no women. Why?" Olga replied that that was why she was applying for a position in a women's college!
