A Good Book About the Anatomy of a UFO Event Paul Dellinger's years of reportorial skills allowed him to do a most excellent job detailing the UFO events in this book, events that were eventually aired on the TV Show UNSOLVED Mysteries. Paul is detailed oriented writer as is his partner Danny Gordon. I was one of the speakers at the public gathering in Rural Retreat, and they got the details of what I said with very little error. That alone is hard to do in this day and age of the soundbite. The events detailed in the book happened as outlined. The mystery of what really happened remains like all UFO events thus far-unsolved. Unknown to Danny and Paul, after the talk at the Community College, many lcally prominent citizens contacted me privately and related suspected abduction experiences to me. I did not follow up as at that time I did not give much credibility to abductions. But the book is well done and a good addition to the research library of anyone interested in the subject of UFO's. Ed Floyd came to the University of Virginia to do graduate work in mathematics after receiving his bachelor's degree in 1943 from the University of Alabama. Upon completing his doctorate in 1948, he went to Princeton University as an instructor. He returned to Virginia the next year to join the faculty, remaining at the University throughout the rest of his career. The early years of Ed's career were devoted to research in mathematics. He started as a student of Gordon Whyburn, the head of the department, doing analytic topology. He became interested in groups acting on spaces, which became the dominant theme in his work. In conjunction with Pierre Conner, he created the subject of equivariant cobordism. By the mid-1960's, he had become one of the outstanding topologists in the world. In 1966, Ed became Robert C. Taylor Professor of Mathematics, and assumed the chairmanship of the mathematics department when Gordon Whyburn retired as head of the department that year due to ill health. Ed led the transition from a small personal department to a larger department in a growing university. His three years as chairman were the beginning of a long career of administration and service at the University. In 1974, Ed was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and in 1981 was named Vice President and Provost of the University. In 1981, he also received the University of Virginia's highest honor, the Thomas Jefferson Award for contributions to the University. Ed returned to teaching and research in 1986, after his long period in administration.

DANCE
ARIEL DANCE THEATRE premieres a series of new works in her latest evening of adventurous dance theatre, Tangle . In four pieces, choreographer Andrea Ariel fuses dance and visual theatre to crash the outer world of mechanization into the inner world of isolation. There's an unusual holiday picnic at an industrial park, a surreal parade of humans through an urban jungle, a comic study of being stuck and unstuck, and a meditation on the silent places within us. Featuring dance work by Ariel, Ellen Bartel, Lisa Fehrman, and Jennifer Denham. James McCartney provides original music, with sets by Ann Marie Gordon, lights by Robert Whyburn, costumes by Olivia Aldin, and metal works by Brandon Ariel. THREE PERFORMANCES ONLY! Jumping on the Bard-wagon
BY ROBI POLGAR
September 17, 1999:
As You Like It
"It's the movie,"
says Bill Sheffield, board member of the Austin Shakespeare Festival (ASF) and director of the Festival's second play of the season, Othello , when asked why there seems to be so much Shakespeare on Austin stages these days. He's being a little facetious, but when the same question is asked of Paul Norton, artistic director of ASF, whose As You Like It is running in repertory with Othello , Norton grins and comes up with the same response: "It's the movie." The movie is Shakespeare in Love , which turned the rather unhandsome, brooding book-jacket icon into a swashbuckling, charming, romantic hero right out of one of his works. And with that makeover, the author's plays have taken on a renewed energy, a playfulness, a sparkle: Cavorting is "in" this season, passion, too (of varieties pure and base). Academic productions hewing to "proper" stagings of the great works are out of favor, supplanted by experimentation, theatricality, and so much enthusiasm it's as if years have been shed from those familiar pages. In the spring, Robert Faires (
