      ABSTRACT

Images of Exile and Racial Conflict in Lamartine's Toussaint Louverture John R. Whittaker
The University of Hull I t has been written that "Lamartine's poetry springs from a great unifying theme, the theme of dispossession, of disinheritance." It therefore seems logical that exile, that is to say the dispossession of one's native land, the disinheritance of one's national culture, should be the guiding theme of his play Toussaint Louverture Nevertheless, the theme of exile seems to be at variance with the subject of the play, which is racial conflict, from the cynical exploitation of one race by another to armed conflict between the two. The theme of exile is chorally presented in the first scene by the words of the Marseillaise Noire
Enfants des noirs, proscrits du monde,
Portez le deuil sur votre peau!
        Osez retrouver en tout lieu
Des femmes, des enfants, un Dieu:
Members of the black races are here described as being banished [proscrits] from the world, exiled from their true human nature, turned into a foul race of animals. We are to understand that this is no consequence of racial difference, but of racial prejudice. Needless to say, slavery entailed not only this metaphorical exile, but also physical displacement from the African homeland. They may not hope to return there, but the Republican concept of Liberty enables their discovery of a wider homeland, and also a rediscovery of their humanity.

Legends of Climbing Stories from the World s Greatest Mountain Climbers Ed Viesturs, Greg Child, Lou whittaker, john Roskelley, Stacy Allison, Jim Wickwire.
    http://classic.mountainzone.com/climbing/misc/legends2.html
The Legends of Climbing (page 3 of 4)
Lou Whittaker: "What we're hearing here tonight proves that we've all been damn lucky, and maybe that's tempered by a little bit a good judgment as well. When you see a climber like Willi Unsoeld die in an avalanche on Mount Rainier, you have to admit that even the best of climbers can make mistakes. Remember, there are old climbers and bold climbers, but no old, bold climbers. That risk is always there. We've lost a lot of friends but we have a great time in the mountains. Security is a superstition, as Helen Keller said, it does not exist in nature. Avoiding danger is no safer than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing."
John Roskelley: But, ironically, one of my most interesting experiences in the mountains had nothing to do with climbing. It was during an approach in the Himalaya, and I was walking along by myself listening to my Walkman. I crested a small hill and found myself face-to-face with a snow leopard. It was an incredible experience, and it shows how the good times had while climbing have as much to do with the places you go and people you go with as with the actual climbing.
