    Flintknapping
Making and Understanding Stone Tools Table of Contents and Excerpt By John C. Whittaker
"...very attractive to readers interested in ancient crafts, survival skills, or the history of technology.... far superior to anything currently available." "A mid-range user's guide to flintknapping is long overdue. There have been some admirable attempts to produce such a volume, but these have been targeted at specific, fairly narrow audiences. Not so with Flintknapping .... [Whittaker's] clear aim is to reach professional archaeologists as well as hobbyists. I believe he achieves this goal with incredible skill and humor.... I highly recommend this book to everyone interested in flintknapping." Flintknapping is an ancient craft enjoying a resurgence of interest among both amateur and professional students of prehistoric cultures. In this new guide, John C. Whittaker offers the most detailed handbook on flintknapping currently available and the only one written from the archaeological perspective of interpreting stone tools as well as making them. Flintknapping contains detailed, practical information on making stone tools. Whittaker starts at the beginner level and progresses to discussion of a wide range of techniques. He includes information on necessary tools and materials, as well as step-by-step instructions for making several basic stone tool types. Numerous diagrams allow the reader to visualize the flintknapping process, and drawings of many stone tools illustrate the discussions and serve as models for beginning knappers.

Dr. Whittaker's research interests lie in the area of risk analysis, a field of study where the methods and theories of engineering and decision analysis are used to try to predict the effect an engineered facility will have on public safety and health.
Dr. Whittaker's current research interests include:
  • Longitudinal modelling of land use patterns within a buffer zone. Engineered facilities that process toxic, hazardous, or explosive substances pose a threat to the immediate vicinity. Traditionally the first line of defence against an engineered or natural hazard is a buffer or exclusion zone. This is an area of control that surrounds the threat. For castles it was a cleared field and a moat, for flood plains it is zoning controls, for a nuclear power plant it is remote siting, and for a pipeline it is an easement or corridor. Recently, with the increased production of toxic substances and higher levels of environmental awareness, more attention has been focused upon the development of guidelines for exclusion zones.
  • To date the tendency has been to treat buffer zones as static spatial problems. Models are used to calculate dispersion of toxic plumes. Land uses compatible with the calculated risk are then proposed. However these calculations are based upon a spe cific set of temporal parameters: line pressure, percentage H2S, response capability, etc. which will change. There has been little attempt to address the situation as a dynamic process wherein most of the major parameters, and consequently the threat an d the land use patterns, change. However, change is the normal situation for such a zone. The objective of this research is to explore the dynamics of a buffer zone.

    A Family History
    The Whittakers
James Tomlinson's wife Margaret Whittaker was born on the 10th March 1841 and died on April 16th, 1911. Her obituary was published on the following Wednesday.
    Margaret Whittaker 1841-1911
Death of Mrs James Tomlinson We regret to announce the death, which occurred at Blackpool early on Sunday morning, of Mrs, Tomlinson, wife of Alderman James Tomlinson, J.P., of Church-terrace. Mrs. Tomlinson had not been in the best of health for some few months past. About three weeks ago she attended, along with her husband, a gathering at the house of a Blackpool friend, and the same evening she was taken ill. Fortunately she was staying with relatives at the time, because so serious did her condition become that removal home could not be entertained. Complications ensuing, jaundice developed, and she passed away as already stated at the age of seventy years. Her body was conveyed to Darwen in the early hours of Monday morning, and it lies at her late residence in Church-terrace, awaiting the interment, which will take place at noon to-day, at the Darwen Cemetery, the Rev. S.A. Parsons, M.A., officiating. The deceased lady was highly esteemed by all who knew her and had been associated with her homely and kind nature. She was a devoted mother and wife, and Alderman Tomlinson and his family have suffered a great loss by her death. Mrs. Tomlinson was a daughter of the late Mrs. Sanderson, a member of an old Lower Chapel family, whose death only occurred three years ago, at the ripe old age of eighty-nine years. In her early life she was a member of the choir at Lower Chapel, and married Alderman Tomlinson forty nine years ago, the ceremony taking place at Duckworth-street Congregational Church, with the late Rev. Thomas Davies the officiating minister. Over thirty years ago the family commenced to worship at the Belgrave Independent Meeting House, and have done so ever since, Mrs. Tomlinson being a regular worshipper there, and along with the family a prominent supporter of the Chapel and Schools.

    John Whittaker, Professor
John Whittaker (BA Cornell U. 1975, PHD U. of Arizona 1984) has been teaching at Grinnell since 1984. He considers himself an anthropological archaeologist, which means that while he prefers working with ancient people, he considers himself free to snoop into any aspect of human life, and all people living and dead are fair game. With Kathy Kamp, he conducts the summer archaeological field school near Flagstaff, Arizona, and the prehistoric Southwest is his research heartland, although a project in Belize is in the works. His technical expertise is in flintknapping and stone tool analysis, prehistoric technologies, and faunal analysis, and his book, Flintknapping: Making and Understanding Stone Tools (1994) is one of the "best sellers" from the Univ. of Texas Press. He is currently working on an ethnography of modern non-academic flint-knappers. He teaches Introduction to Anthropology and mostly archaeological courses such as Archaeological Field Methods, North American Archaeology, and Old World Prehistory, and prefers courses where he can include class projects like processing and eating acorns, digging pits and storing corn in them, making dugout canoes with bronze age axes, and firing pottery with cow pies in his backyard. Coach Whittaker also promotes the Grinnell College Raging Cows, the world's first collegiate atlatl team, which hosts an annual spear throwing competition.
