John G. Hocking and Gail S. Young, Topology , Dover Publications, Inc., New York 1988. (This work was first published, by Addison-Wesley, in 1961)
This is an excellent book that gives the motivation for topological concepts along with rigorous definitions, and does a good job of communicating why topologists love topology. Some of the terminology is somewhat archaic. The concept of category appears only implicitly in the first section. The authors use transformation where today one more commonly hears map or mapping , and separated for our disconnected (beware a possible confusion with the French usage of to mean Hausdorff References Nicolas Bourbaki, General Topology John Kelly, General Topology , Van Nostrand, Princeton NJ 1955.

Learning Math by Thinking
by FRED. M. HECHINGER From The New York Times for Tuesday, June 10, 1986 School reformers, business executives and politicians are demanding more mathematics for American children. Schools are responding, at least in terms of the hours given to math. Not all mathematicians are cheering. They worry that pressures for more hours of mathematics may hurt rahter than help, unless mathematics is taught differently. Dr. Hassler Whitney, a distinguished mathematician at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, says that for several decades mathematics teaching has largely failed. He predicts that the current round of tougher standards and longer hours threatens to "throw great numbers, already with great math anxiety, into severe crisis." Dr. Whitney has spent many years in classrooms, both teaching mathematics and observing how it is taught, and he calls for an end to what he considers wrongheaded ways. Long before school, he says, very young children "learn in manifold ways, at a rate that will never be equalled in later life, and with no formal teaching." For example, they learn to speak and communicate, and to deal with their environment. Yes the same children find much simpler things far more difficult as soon as they are formally taught in school. Learning mathematics, Dr. Whitney says, should mean "finding one's way through problems of new sorts, and taking responsibility for the results."

Hassler Whitney
Hassler Whitney in the news Hassler Whitney 23 March 10 May 1989) was a US mathematician, who was one of the founders of singularity theory . He was born in New York City, and graduated from Yale University in 1928. He then did research work at Harvard University , under G.D. Birkhoff, writing a Ph.D in graph theory (1932). He then held positions at Harvard until 1952 (professor from 1946), moving to the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. He retired in 1977, and died in Switzerland. He was awarded a Wolf Prize in mathematics in 1983, and a Steele Prize in 1985. In 1935 Whitney proved that any differential manifold of dimension n may be embedded in R n , and immersed in R n . This basic result shows that manifolds may be treated intrinsically or extrinsically, as we wish. It is often said that this paper contains the first accurate definition of 'manifold'; it certainly built on the work of Veblen and J.H.C. Whitehead published a few years earlier. It opened the way for much more refined studies: of embedding, immersion and also of smoothing, that is, the possibility of having various smooth structures on a given topological manifold. The argument of Whitney is necessarily of general position type.

Accession No. Extent 3 in. Language English. Repository Center for American History,The University of Texas at Austin
Scope and Contents
Transcripts of oral history interviews with 43 individuals concerning their memories of mathematics at Princeton University during the 1930s. The interviews focus on the institutional and social context of the Princeton graduate program and the Institute for Advanced Study as they developed, as well as the personalities of the people involved. Prominent individuals involved with Princeton in the 1930s included James Alexander, Albert Einstein, Luther Eisenhart, Solomon Lefschetz, Marston Morse, Oswald Veblen, John von Neumann, Hermann Weyl and Eugene Wigner. Most of these individuals had died at the time of these interviews, however several faculty members as well as graduate students, visitors and permanent researchers took part in the oral history project. Arranged alphabetically by interviewee.
