From there White entered the Wesleyan University, in Middletown, Connecticut, which was founded in 1831 by a group of Methodists. At the Wesleyan University White was taught mathematics by Van Vleck 's father. Klein 's supervision, the doctorate being awarded for the thesis in 1891. On his return to the United States, White was appointed to Clark University, then professor of pure mathematics at Northwestern University before being appointed, in 1905, as professor at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. Vassar College was then a college for women, founded to provide women with a quality of education previously only available to men. Grace Hopper was one who benefitted from the quality education provided there.

A new program is underway to grow diamond, diamond-like carbon, nitrides and other thin films on a variety of substrates using energetic laser deposition and ECR microwave techniques. IRRAS studies completed include a high-resolution measurement of the linewidth of CO on a Pt (111) crystal surface as a function of temperature. Linewidths measured were the most narrow reported to date, and are in agreement with recently reported direct lifetime measurements. A low noise, high sensitivity Raman Spectrometer that employs a cooled CCD detector is being used for surface and interface studies of a variety of adsorbate and thin film systems. These include the initial stages of oxide layer growth on iron and aluminum, zinc phosphate films on steel,conversion coatings on metal matrix composites, and diamond films.

He was born in 1785 in Nottingham where the Exchange Walk Arcade now stands on Cheapside. A small slate plaque just inside the entrance to the Arcade marks the location. He was the son of a butcher who became a lawyers Clerk in Bridlesmiths Gate when 14 years old. An Exhausting Pace He put all his energy into his work and his studies before taking his first steps into poetry. In a letter to a friend he wrote:- 'I have been for the last three months busily engaged in preparing a volume of poems for the press. To this undertaking every moment which I could snatch from business and sleep has been devoted ... perhaps you will deem me presumptuous that I venture to appear before the public at so early an age but I have been encouraged by ... men of eminence in the literary world ... I have not the capacity to pursue my studies as I would wish from a narrowness of income, this book if successful will be a material health to me.' In fact he was expending so much energy in work, studies and poetry that he was becoming ill. He became so fragile he believed he was about to die and made it known he wanted to be buried in one of his favorite locations, Wilford.
