William Whiston and the Deluge
The years 1680 and 1682 were years of unusually bright comets. Many pamphlets were printed, especially in Germany, on the imminent end of the world; at the very least, great catastrophes were expected. There was nothing new in such prognostications. In earlier centuries and also earlier in the seventeenth century, comets were regarded with awe and every possible evil effect was ascribed to them. Thus a scholarly author, David Herlicius, published in 1619 a discourse on a comet that had appeared shortly before, in 1618, and enumerated the calamities that this comet, and comets in general, bring with them or presage: The fear and even horror caused by the comet of 1680 was just beginning to calm down when in 1682 another great comet appeared. Edmund Halley was twenty-six years old when this comet of 1682 appeared. He had experience in astronomical observations and calculations, having spent time on the island of St. Helena, cataloguing there 341 southern stars; he had observed the transit of Mercury, and made pendulum observations. Now he calculated the orbit of the comet of 1682, and predicted its return in 1759. Actually, the periodicity of comets was not first discovered by Halley. The ancient authors knew that comets have their time of revolution. Seneca wrote in his treatise A comet with a periodicity of about 70 years was known to the rabbis.

William Whiston
William Whiston December 9 August 22 English divine and mathematician , was bom at Norton in Leicestershire , of which village his father was rector. He was educated privately, partly on account of the delicacy of his health, and partly that he might act as amanuensis to his father, who had lost his sight. He afterwards entered at Clare College, Cambridge , where he applied himself to mathematical study, and obtained a fellowship in . He next became chaplain to John Moore (1646-1714), the learned bishop of Norwich, from whom he received the living of Lowestoft in . He had already given several proofs of his noble but over-scrupulous conscientiousness, and at the same time of a propensity to paradox. His New Theory of the Earth (1696), although destitute of sound scientific foundation, obtained the praise of both Newton and Locke , the latter of whom justly classed the author among those who, if not adding much to our knowledge, "At least bring some new things to our thoughts." In he resigned his living to become deputy at Cambridge to Sir Isaac Newton, whom two years later he succeeded as

Whiston's Flood
As the tension between science and religion reached a breaking point in the late 1600s there developed concerted attempt to establish correspondence between the newly understood orbits of celestial bodies and past events and catastrophes known from myths and the bible. Hence it was thought possible that the floods of Deucalion, Ogyges, and Noah might be found to be one and the same, and to correspond with some catastropheic natural event such as the famous comet that had been observed at the Royal Observatory at Greenwich in 1680. This attempt to smooth over a growing split between faith in scripture and the new observational science had been going on for some time; for example the work of Copernicus was interpreted in an unsigned preface to his work by a Lutheran clergyman Andreas Osiander as merely being a computational convenience rather than an absolute truth, a view that might be perfectly satisfactory to most philosophers of science in the post Kuhnian era, though it was repugnant to Kepler who said "it was the view of a jackass written for the consumption of other jackasses." No one was more concerned with this tension than Sir Isaac Newton himself, who, after completing much of his most important scientific work went on to write a number of tracts on religious matters, among them his poathumasly published but little known

The New Complete Works of Josephus

In studying Judean history in the first century CE, there is no historian more important than Josephus, especially when one is interested in the study of the historical Jesus or of the world around him (the religious/social/political climate, etc.) Josephus is not only the only Jewish historian of this era to comment on Jesus, he is the only Jewish historian to thoroughly present the history as well as psychological outlook of Jews through a lengthy span of time. His works are immeasurably i... more...

Hi, I lived in Guilthwaite Hall between 1979 and 1984 as a teenager (name Nicholson) and was quite fascinated by your website. When we (my family an I) lived in Guilthwaite Hall we discovered in the loft of the house that it had once been a three story house as the old walls still remained. It would be fascinating to know whether you have found any old blueprints of the house. I know that Rotherham Library has some old maps of place showing the paddock adjoining the main road to be an orchard and that Charles II lived there for a short time when he was a child.

I deeply regret that, as I drove by the signs to your village, that I was unable to find the time to visit. Is the village name at all related to William Whiston who was at Cambridge in the 1600's? Thank you for the information and a short trip down almost memory lane.

Grandson of Lionel A. Whiston, who left UK in the early 1900's for Massachusetts.

Flavius Josephus (ca. 38-100), Jewish priest, celebrated soldier and later historian for Rome, was born immediately after the time of Jesus. He wrote in detail about his homeland, including the Roman occupation and the fall of Jerusalem from 66 to 70 A.D. His writings are indispensible to a proper understanding of Jewish thought, background and history up to and around the time of Christ. This volume presents his works, complete and unabridged, with section-by-section numbering system which enables one to locate particular sentences, rather than whole chapters. Translation by William Whiston, English mathematician and historian who succeeded Isaac Newton at the University of Cambridge. Quantity About the Translator: William Whiston, English mathematician and historian, succeeded Isaac Newton at the University of Cambridge.
