After submitting a doctoral dissertation He attempted to incorporate electromagnetism into the geometric formalism of general relativity. Weyl published (1913) which united analysis, geometry and topology . He produced the first guage theory in which the Maxwell electromagnetic field and the gravitational field appear as geometrical properties of space-time. From 1923-38 he evolved the concept of continuous groups using matrix representations . With his application of group theory to quantum mechanics he set up the modern subject. He also made contributions on the uniform distribution of numbers modulo 1 which are fundamental in analytic number theory More recently attempts to incorporate electromagnetism into general relativity have been made by John Wheeler, Kaluza and others. These theories, like Weyl's, lack the connection with quantum phenomena that is so important for interactions other than gravitation.

Weyl, Hermann German mathematician and mathematical physicist who studied mainly topological space and the geometry of Bernhard Riemann, but also quantum mechanics and number theory. As a colleague of Albert Einstein during 1913, Weyl became interested in the developing general theory of relativity and came to believe (erroneously) that he had found a way to a grand unification of gravitation and electromagnetism. Weyl was able to anticipate the nonconservation of parity, which has since been found to be characteristic of weak interactions between leptons (a class of subatomic particles). Weyl's most important work on Riemann surfaces was the definition of the complex manifold of the first dimension, which has been important in all later work on the theory of both complex and of differential manifolds. Weyl's works include Raum-Zeit-Materie/Space-Time-Matter 1918. He also published works on philosophy, logic, and the history of mathematics.

The outgrowth of a course of lectures on relativity, Weyl's Raum, Zeit, Materie (1918; "Space, Time, Matter") reveals his keen interest in philosophy and embodies the bulk of his findings on relativity. He produced the first unified field theory for which the Maxwell electromagnetic field and the gravitational field appear as geometrical properties of space-time. The influence of these studies on differential geometry is exemplified best by his treatment of the Italian mathematician Tullio Levi-Civita's concept of parallel displacement of a vector. Weyl freed the concept from dependence on a Riemann metric and thus set the stage for the rapid development of projective differential geometry by Oswald Veblen of the U.S. and others. From 1923 to 1938 Weyl evolved a general theory of continuous groups using matrix representation.
