By Bruce Shapiro Back in the mid-1990s, John DiIulio, an ambitious Princeton political scientist and scholar of prison management and crime, made a stir with what turned out to be one of the most disastrously wrong predictions in the annals of public intellectuals. Relying upon reams of supposedly irrefutable data, DiIulio predicted a massive coming wave of crime by children and teenagers crime of unprecedented brutality. Situating this prediction in the erosion of family and faith, DiIulio warned of a "generational wolf pack" of "fatherless, Godless and jobless" teens wreaking havoc on the American landscape. "Superpredators," he called them. The tidal wave of superpredators never arrived. Instead, juvenile crime plummeted. But seizing upon DiIulio's incendiary predictions and prescriptions, politicians in both political parties created their own tidal wave a tidal wave of unforgiving punishment. Harsh juvenile prison sentences, the incarceration of teenagers, massive expansion of juvenile prisons: All were propelled forward by DiIulio's superpredator theory.

Dr. West played a major role in the growth of the Institute under the directorship of Dr. J. William Doane. He was appointed a Senior Research Fellow in 1984 and concentrated on the development of polymer dispersed liquid crystals. He became Associate Director for Applied Programs in 1988. He participated in the preparation of the proposal for the National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center for Advanced Liquid Crystalline Optical Materials (ALCOM). He initiated its Industrial Partnership program, which has attracted over 30 North American companies. In parallel with his administrative duties, Dr. West maintains an active and productive research program. Note for the curious: This article was "discovered" in serendipitous fashion in the Spring of 1995 by HyperLaw's President while he was searching through boxes of exhibits introduced at the trial of West v. Mead in 1988. Why this article was filed as an exhibit in the trial remains a puzzle. ¶1 No one who has to do with the profession in connection with the purchase or use of books, can fail to notice the continual complaint of increasing cost, of lack of shelf room, of confusing citations and other complications arising from multiplicity of reports. The problem presents itself in an increasingly serious way from year to year as the number of courts and the number of decisions increase. ¶2 It is said that the annual expenditure for current decisions is $500,000 more than it would be if the libraries and lawyers were not obliged to purchase the same case again and again. ¶3 Every unnecessary book or page of a book which is purchased and used must be shelved and preserved, and in many libraries, especially in the large cities, the question of shelf room is so important that anything which unnecessarily increases it is to be avoided.

He has been interested in science for as long as he can remember. Already in high school he was carrying out simple chemical experiments at home and building radios. It was in his last years of high school that he fell in love with physics and chemistry. He wasn’t able to study biology because those were the days before biology was taught in his high school. Medical School in Other Countries John attended high school in Adelaide, although it was called Prince Alfred College. It was one of the better schools in Adelaide and one of his uncles was on the teaching faculty. He then attended Adelaide University, which in his day was the only university in the state of South Australia. He went straight from high school into medical school (called the faculty of medicine). This was the system at Adelaide University at the time. It is also the procedure in many other parts of the world where students go from high school (or gymnasium as it’s called) into medicine or some other science. However, John did not become interested in physiology in medical school, partly because it was badly taught. Finding Physiology After receiving his degree, Dr. West moved from Adelaide to London, UK. He made the move after a year, because research programs in medicine were not well developed in Adelaide at the time and because he wanted to see the world. It was while he was doing his postgraduate training there that he realized that his interests were in mechanics, such as pressures, flows, resistances, elasticity, etc. This led him to the natural conclusion to go into either cardiovascular or respiratory physiology.
