Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco San Francisco, California John Steuart Curry: Inventing the Middle West, at the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum 13 June - 30 August 1998 John Steuart Curry was, with Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton, one of the three leading painters identified as Regionalists and known today for their canvases celebrating the rural Midwest. Although he created paintings that are America's art icons, Curry has never before received scholarly attention, and this is the first comprehensive exhibition of Curry's work in more than 25 years. Self Portrait, 1937, oil on canvas, 30 x 24 inches This 1998 show of 35 oil paintings and 10 drawings includes all of the artist's best known paintings, such as his famous Baptism in Kansas , 1928, from the Whitney Museum of Art, and his John Brown of 1937, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Also featured is the Fine Arts Museums' recent acquisition, Curry's 1937 Self-Portrait , acquired in 1996 with the gift of Mr. and Mrs. J. Burgess Jamieson. R egionalist painting had three major exponents: Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood, and John Steuart Curry. With these two artists Curry led the movement to create and celebrate what he felt was an indigenous and democratic American art - Regionalism - in a reaction against European modernist trends. While the works of Benton and Wood have received a great deal of scholarly and public attention, Curry's work has historically been overlooked.

(though it is for personal medical reasons only) Click on the picture to see my public personal details Introduction You must satisfy yourself that this risk is worth taking. In my opinion the doctors will let you go on as long as you don't complain too much. Before World War II, people who had Ulcerative Colitis (UC) badly enough died, probably of peritonitis when their colon perforated, causing the bowel to spill into the abdominal cavity. The problems were inadequate surgical technique in joining the ileum to the stomach wall and primitive appliances failing to adequately seal the collecting device to the body. Surgeons refused to operate because the exteriorised bowel became inflamed, contracted and eventually obstructed. Collecting devices were useless and most people were allowed to perforate. The few who were operated on lived solitary lives (because of the odour) while many died, unable to cope with the complications in the area of the stoma. After the war, a new surgical technique was developed by Professor Bryan Brookes MD MChir FRCS Hon FRACS everted stoma (spout). By turning the ileum inside out, the inner mucosa surface was then the surface in contact with the effluent, and this method was so successful it was eventually used worldwide and is referred to as the "Brooke Eversion Technique". This new technique and rapid advances in materials technology, invariably saved peoples lives and undoubtedly gave sufferers an opportunity of a new life from the 1960s. For my Brooke

134. John M. Gates, Ch. 3, The Pacification Of The Philippines - Title
Experience in the decadesold 'Indian Wars' in the American west served the US Army veterans well in the war against Philippine irregulars in the 1899-1902 war. By john M. Gates.

Return to Table of Contents JOHN M. GATES, THE U.S. ARMY AND IRREGULAR WARFARE, CHAPTER THREE THE PACIFICATION OF THE PHILIPPINES Of the U. S. Army's early encounters with irregulars, none is more relevant to contemporary concerns than the army's campaign in the Philippines at the end of the nineteenth century, and my study of the Philippine-American War provided the foundation for much of my thinking on irregular warfare. I began research on the topic in 1964 when I embarked upon a Ph.D. program at Duke University. At the time the army's successful campaign in the Philippines stood in marked contrast to its then stalemated efforts in Vietnam. I finished my thesis in 1967, and over the next two years I revised the manuscript for publication in the Greenwood Press military history series. Although I sent the completed book manuscript to the publisher in 1970, publication was delayed until 1973. I have no idea why publication took so long, but I have always suspected that someone at the press did not want to bring out the book until American participation in the Vietnam War had ended. Praising the U. S. Army, even for work done more than a half century before, was bound to prove controversial, as it has. Since 1973 I have revised my views on the Philippine campaign to incorporate the work of other scholars and new research of my own. The first formal opportunity to present an updated analysis came in 1980 when I was invited to participate in the United States Air Force Academy's Ninth Military History Symposium. I revised the symposium paper, "The Pacification of the Philippines, 1898-1902,"

John Brown/Boyd B. Stutler Collection Database In December 1999, to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the hanging of John Brown in Charles Town, West Virginia, the West Virginia State Archives placed online a new electronic database of materials pertaining to Brown from the Boyd B. Stutler Collection. A recognized authority on the man, Boyd Stutler (1889-1970) created one of the most important John Brown collections in existence. The State of West Virginia acquired this body of material in 1977. In 1998, the West Virginia State Archives became one of 41 recipients of the first National Leadership Grants awarded by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services. With this funding, staff at the State Archives have digitized over 20,000 pages of material from the Stutler Collection and linked them to fully searchable descriptive text. Pictorial materials now available include photographs of John Brown and his family and contemporary artist renderings of the October 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry and Brown's trial and execution at Charles Town. Also part of the database are photographs of Brown's comrades-in-arms, other associates, various sites in the United States and Canada with which Brown or members of his family were connected. The latter include views of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, and Brown's homestead at North Elba, New York. This database also contains over 100 original John Brown letters and manuscripts, a similar number of family letters, and three books of business letters from Brown's partnership with Simon Perkins in the wool trade. There are several hundred letters of Brown's associates and biographers as well. Prominent among the correspondents are George Luther Stearns and Frank Sanborn, both members of Brown's "Secret Six," the group of New England abolitionists who supported Brown's foray into Virginia in 1859. Also prominently represented are Brown associate and author Richard Hinton and William Connelley, like Sanborn an early biographer of John Brown.

. . . But while I stood and wondered what he spoke,
There came a meaning like a spirit flame;
And then I saw the man was not the same.
He burned until his body was all light;
And if he were a brown man or a white,
I did not think at all. I only knew
How all that we had heard was coming true;
But all I knew no tongue can ever say.
