Harper's Magazine
June, 2000 by Tom Chaffin
A road trip in search of the Oregon Trail 8 Determined to draw their maps as accurately as possible, Fremont and his cartographer, Charles Preuss, treated the West as a vast tabula rasa, depicting only lands and landforms that they had personally surveyed; areas uncrossed by the expedition, like this one, were simply left blank. A hundred and fifty years later, there is hardly a square foot of America that hasn't been photographed from space, digitized, and posted on the Internet, let alone surveyed. This corner of Fremont County, Wyoming, is so empty that it's still easy to imagine what this terra incognita would have looked like, how terribly and magnificently strange it must have seemed as strange as the moonto those first migrants from the East. On today's government maps these sparsely populated acres look like this: Next

Portrait of Major General Paul Mascarene
Oil on canvas 40 1/2 x 31 5/8 in. (103 x 80.3 cm) Purchased with funds provided by the Mr. and Mrs. William Preston Harrison Collection, the Charles H. Quinn bequest, Eli Harvey, and other donors, 78.8 John Smibert divided his early career between Edinburgh, his birthplace, and London, where he variously studied art, worked as a plasterer, painted houses and coaches, and eventually set up as a portrait painter and copyist. He arrived in Italy in 1717, copied master paintings in Florence and Rome for his patron Cosimo III de' Medici, and then returned to London. By 1722 he had a studio there and was considered a leading portraitist. Smibert arrived in the American colonies in 1728, attracted by climate, opportunity, and the promise of employment in a visionary utopian colony to be established in the Bermudas. It failed to materialize, but he remained, the first fully trained artist in the colonies. He established a highly successful portrait practice in Boston.

As these islands were a great international crossroads of shipping in the 19th century involving post offices or postal activity of several countries, this study area encompasses philatelic material from not only the Danish West Indies but North America, Scandinavia, England, Spain, France, South America, Mexico, Cuba, Haiti, all of the Greater and Lesser Antilles, as well as other countries whose mail passed through St. Thomas and St. Croix. Membership in the Study Unit is informal, all collectors with an interest in the region are welcome and encouraged to participate in its correspondence and activity. The Study Unit was formed in the mid 1970's as an outgrowth of the preparation of the three volume publication DWI Mails , edited by Victor Engstrom. "Protecting Our Military Families in Times of War"
A Military Family Bill of Rights
As Prepared for Delivery
One year ago this week, American soldiers raced across the desert to Baghdad. Ten months ago, George Bush stood on an aircraft carrier and proclaimed "mission accomplished." But today we know that the mission is not finished, hostilities have not ended, and our men and women in uniform fight on almost alone with the target squarely on their backs. Everyday, they face danger and death from suicide bombers, roadside bombers, and now ironically, from the very Iraqi police they are training. We are still bogged down in Iraq - and the Administration stubbornly holds to failed policies that drive potential allies away. What we have seen is a steady loss of lives and mounting costs in dollars, with no end in sight. We were misled about weapons of mass destruction. We are misled now when the costs of Iraq are not even counted in the President's budget. But having gone to war, we have a responsibility to keep and a national interest to achieve in a stable and peaceful Iraq. To leave too soon would leave behind a failed state that inevitably would become a haven for terrorists and a threat to our future, a problem for the Middle East, and a dangerous setback in the war against terror.

Looky What Matt Found
Yankee Matt Yglesias notes: Down South, naturally enough, one sees more Confederate flag bumpers stickers than are evident in my more habitual environs (New York, Cambridge, Washington, Maine, Europe...I'm quite the liberal elitist) and they were often paired with exhortions to "support the troops" or some other such thing. This brought to mind something that I always think is strangely neglected in the on-again-off-again Stars and Bars debate in this country, to wit: the Confederate flag is a flag of rebellion against the United States of America and thus an odd symbol for the erstwhile uberpatriots of Dixie. The rebellious culture of Dixie is only neglected when people are stating that the only thing the flag stands for is racism. I disagree with Confederate flag wavers state that the rebellious culture is what the flag is all about, just as much as members of certain minority communities state the flag is all about racism. It seems to me that if Matt thinks this part of the debate appears to be missing, he really has not been paying attention to the debate at all.
