Caspar Wessel 's father, Jonas Wessel, and his grandfather were both ministers in the church. His mother, Helene Marie Schumacher and Jonas had a large family consisting of fourteen children; Caspar was the sixth of the fourteen. Caspar, together with his two elder brothers Johan Herman Wessel and Ole Christopher Wessel, attended Christiania Cathedral School in the city of Christiania from 1757 until 1763 (Christiania was later renamed Kristiania, then Oslo in 1925). Caspar could not attend university in Norway for, at that time, there were no Norwegian universities. Since Norway was united with Denmark, the natural place for Norwegians to go for a university education was Denmark, and Caspar's brothers Johan Herman and Ole Christopher were already at the University of Copenhagen, having entered in 1761. Caspar spent one year, from 1763 to 1764, studying at the University of Copenhagen but, as one might imagine, the large family was putting quite a strain on his parent's finances. As we shall see below, this led to both Caspar and his brother Ole Christopher obtaining positions as surveyors with the Royal Danish Academy. Ole Christopher and Caspar were studying at the University of Copenhagen for a law degree. Ole Christopher started to work as a surveyor to help pay his way through university while Caspar was still at school. Obtaining his law degree in 1770, Ole Christopher went on to reach a very elevated position in the legal profession in Norway. Johan Herman (three years older than Caspar) became a poet and is the only one of the Wessel children to have their own entry in

Caspar Wessel and Complex Numbers On March 10, 1797 Caspar Wessel presented his paper, ``On the analytic Representation of Direction,'' to the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences. In his paper, Wessel gives the first clear, geometric interpretation of complex numbers. For Wessel, and for us today, a complex number is either the point (where and are real numbers) in the complex plane, or the directed radius vector from the origin to that point.
Written in the from , the complex number is said to be in Rectangular or Cartesian form. An alternate way to represent this number is in polar form, written in terms of the length of the vector (or modulus) and the angle between the vector and the x-axis (the argument). The length of the vector is and the angle is . So we can represent the same number as note: The domain of is the interval so we need the
following restriction: Next, Wessel described addition of complex numbers. First, consider two directed line segments along the x-axis, possibly pointed in the opposite direction. To add these two segments, we position the starting point of one at the terminal point of the other. The sum is the net resulting line segment from the initial point of the first to the terminal point of the second. Wessel decided that addition of complex number should follow the same rule. Look at the foolowing figure to see how this works
Of course, for complex numbers the initial point of both vectors will be centered at the origin of the complex plane.

Caspar Wessel Norwegian Danish mathematician , born in Jonsrud, Vestby Akershus Norway In , having completed secondary school, he went to Denmark for further studies (Norway having at the time no university). he acquired the degree of candidatus juris. From 1794, however, he was employed as a surveyor (from 1798 as Royal inspector of Surveying). It was the mathematical aspect of surveying that led him to exploring the geometrical significance of complex numbers . His fundamental paper, Om directionens analytiske betegning, was published in 1799 by the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters . Since it was in Danish, it passed almost unnoticed, and the same results were later independently found by Argand and Gauss Wessel's priority to the idea of a complex number as a point in the complex plane is today universally recognised. His paper was re-issued in French translation in 1899, and in English in 1999 as On the analytic representation of direction (ed. J. Lützen

Having spent one year from 1863 to 1764 at the University of Copenhagen, Wessel obtained a position with the Danish Survey Commission as a cartographer. After obtaining a law degree, he added this expertise and also an expertise in surveying to his collection of skills. At this point he became survey superintendent. Throughout his life Wessel suffered financial hardship but this was largely of his own making. He refused to accept payment for maps which he had been commissioned to make. He did accept the award of a silver medal from the Royal Danish Academy for his work on maps but medals didn't make him well off. Wessel's fame as a mathematician rests solely on one paper which he wrote in 1799 giving a geometrical interpretation of the complex numbers. Today we call this geometric interpretation the Argand diagram but Wessel's work came first. It was rediscovered by
