Julius Weisbach 's father was Christian Gottlieb Weisbach and his mother was Christina Rebekka Stephan. Julius's father was the foreman at a mine, so the family were not well off, particularly since there were nine children. Of the children, Julius was the second youngest. Weisbach was educated at the lyceum in Annaberg near his home town, then at the Bergschule in Freiberg. Having completed the courses at these schools by 1822, Weisbach wanted to continue his education. However, his parents could not afford to finance him so he borrowed money to enable him to attend the Bergakademie in Freiberg. During 1830 Weisbach travelled on foot for six months through Hungary, the Tyrol, Bavaria, and Bohemia. From 1831 he taught mathematics at the Freiberg Gymnasium and, starting in 1832, he also taught mathematics at the Bergakademie in Freiberg. In this same year of 1832, Weisbach married Marie Winkler and they would have a son who was to became the Professor of Mineralogy at the Bergakademie in Freiberg. In 1836 Weisbach was promoted to professor, and his expertise was now such that in addition to mathematics he was professor of mine machinery and of surveying. He had, at this stage only one publication, but this would soon change. From around 1839 he became interested in hydraulics and some of his most important work would be done on this topic. This interest in hydraulics seems to have been as a result of Weisbach visiting the Paris Industrial Exposition in 1839.

  • V ESALIUS, Andreas (1514-1564)

  • De humani corporis fabrica libri septem…
    Basil, 1543
First edition The Fabrica is the culmination of Renaissance anatomy, the coming together of half a century of scientific investigation in the universities of northern Italy and of Renaissance artistic tradition. Vesalius' text, based upon his work at the universities of Paris and Padua, represents a departure from the authority of Aristotle, Galen and Avicenna, whose ideas had dominated anatomical teaching in European universities since the late 13th century. The Fabrica is illustrated with more than 350 woodcuts designed and executed under Vesalius' supervision by Jan Stephan van Calcar (1499-1546?), a fellow Fleming and a member of Titian's studio in Venice. From the collection of the Edward G. Miner Library. Purchased by George W. Corner (1889-1981), chairman of the Department of Anatomy at the School of Medicine from 1924 to 1939.

    WEIGHING MACHINES
WEIGHING MACHINES. Equal-armed Balances. Scale-beams are the most accurate balances, and the most generally used. When. constructed for purposes of extreme accuracy they will turn with the one-millionth part of the load weighed, though to ensure such a result the knife-edges and their hearings must be extremely hard (either hardened steel or agate) and worked up with great care. The beam must be provided with a small ball of metal which can. be screwed up and down a stem on the top of the beam for the purpose of accurately adjusting the position of the centre of gravity, and there should be a small adjustable weight on a fine screw projecting horizontally from one end of the beam for the purpose of accurately balancing the arms. The theory of th,e scale-beam is stated by Weisbach in his Mechanics of Machinery and Engineering, as follows :In fig, I D is the fulcrum of the balance, S the centre of gravity of the beam aone without the scales, chains or weights; A and B the points of suspension A . of the chains. If the length of the arms AC=BC=l,CD=a,SD=s, FIG. I. the angle of deviation of ~ This shows that the time of a vibration increases as P, Q and l increase, and as a and .c diminish. Therefore with equal weights a balance vibrates more slowly the more sensitive it is, and therefore weighing by a sensitive balance is a slower process than with a less sensitive one.

Januar 1599.
Sein Begräbnis vier Tage später, am 30. Januar, ist im Kirchenbuch eingeschrieben worden.
